I have just noticed that the Arogonite in my DT is turning brown in places, my tank has been running now for around six weeks, all the water parameters are within limits.

    Any advice would be welcome.

try "turning" it, like you would turn soil.... any trapped detritus should float thru to your filteration.... thats what i do..

Def Diatoms which use silicates to build their skeletons. You may have silicates entering your water from not using RO water or RO water already high in silicates. You can get yuorself a phosphate sponge which will absorb the silicates

Hi everyone thanks for the advice, would Purigen help?

Here are some pics. Is this still the same problem?

    Hi Dallas,

It is on the other side of the tank from my flow pumps so possibly not much flow

So this is not detrimental to the tank, its only unsightly?
    Is it Diatoms for sure?

Thanks again to everone for all the help.

Usually indicates an excess of nutrients in your water column. You might want to do a series of water changes w/ good gravel vacuuming, as diatoms are usually a precursor to algae growth. Diatoms are harmless, but are usually a warning of things to come. My two cents anyway.

Not sure if Purigen will work but read the bottle when you see it. I know the GFO's like rowaphos or phosban work but they are crazy expensive. Bear in mind that the RO process will only remove about 92-95 percent of all pollutants, so if you have high silicates in your water not all of it will be removed especially as the carbon filter and membrane age. A post carbon or de-ionising filter placed on the RO water outlet will help

as I said earlier, the tank has only been running for around 6 weeks so not sure if I should add the livestock yet?

I did start the tank using Prodibio products and water parameters all look good at the moment except I still need to get my magnesium up quite alot.
