On a more positive forward thinking solution on MASA that the mods and admins might want to look at...

I see some guys have "SPS Guru" below their names etc...

I think there should be a front page type of "Advice needed" where noobs can "PM" the guys that know a specific type of aspect...

For example, If I want to keep Lion Fish or other predators, I know that the first person I would contact is Frans Snyders... If I have any rare fish queries or general fish care queries I would contact Yuri.

So if I log in on MASA, and want advice, cant we have a dedicated link to those guys's PM's that shows they are expert in this field? Not to say of course this one is better than that one, but we already have that with the likes of Brenda on Nennies...

One can actaully link a few people to that, so a noob gets the best advice from the right people at the start of the journey...

    Just a thought...

Ok just had a look again on the Forum page... Basically all that is needed is more specialists in different fields...

One problem with this is if I am gone for an extended period of time, or miss a post (which I have a few times). Then what? This person doesn't get the help they need quickly when there are other people on the forums that can help.

Also, when someone asks a question, there are likely others who learn from it. That won't happen through PMs.

Agreed, so that is why it should work like your link I think. Also, it can go to secondary people (emailed notices for example) that also knows a bit about the topic...

So can the PM part, as it makes sense one wants this public... Just a dedicated team of people on the matter maybe...

The other issue is that all new guys will run straight to the gurus. And now you have 1 poor soul who has to reply to 50 new guys per day.

This is something that has been on my mind for some time now, and also something that I have been struggling with and how to implement something like this.
To be honest I think PM's are not the right way to do it, if questions are asked and answered on the open forum then everybody can share in the knowledge and also voice their opinion or recommend additional advice and so on. Of course people are still free to PM whoever they want and when they want.
A good or maybe a bad idea, the way I see it is if we pick out certain people and say that "these people will give you the best advice" then we are alienating all of the other members and saying their advice and opinion is no good or not wanted, which is definitely not what we want to do.

The idea or concept is a good one, we just need to figure out a way of implementing it, perhaps a forum or page dedicated solely to newcomers to the hobby, a page that has specific threads or articles which will make it easier to understand the different methods of setting up and maintaining a tank. I don't know, share your idea's.

Having more guru's or advisors would be great, but pm's will not work.

I can't tell you the number of pm's I and the other admin guys get .... And its usually something that has been answered on the forum a dozen times ..... The pm system gets a MASSIVE no from me! But the additional advisors gets a thumbs up how we deal with it in terms of new sections etc. Will need some thought application

What annoys me the most is a newby will send me a pm asking for help. I then ask questions about his setup to get an idea of what went wrong just for him to never reply back...

What about a chat section where you can chat to gurus? Kinda like msn type thing, but obviously on the forum. Like a chat room.

Nah, I think MASA already has the receipe... Like with Anemone advice. Get someone who EVERYONE knows or even nominates that knows plenty of the subject. Let that person then decide whether or not he is up to it, and if he is so willingly, appoint him.

I kinda like the police idea, so if someone is in need call the police... This is not even aimed just a noobs though, as tomorrow I might wanna keep SPS coral (somehting believe it or not) I personally have not done so I would want to speak to a guru on the matter from the get go.

Other reefers can not take offence, just the way I know that Brenda knows more than I do on nennies... I think many people might learn more that way too, to also become experts on the matter...

I think however your knowledge should be based on experience and knowhow...

Just add more sections to the Specialist advice area or do the Police thing...

I am more than willing to help out on the NPS side of things no problem. And the more people I can help on it the better - would love to see more NPS dedicated tanks in SA. This would be a great way of aiming our knowledge to anyone wanting it...

I think that some "experts" miss many threads on topics they know like the back of their hand, as MASA has such great traffic on it, and they could have helped out.

What about an alert button? Sort of like the report post button, but instead when clicked it would have a list of people and their specialty. You could then alert this person to the post with a pop up message when they log in.

This would keep things public. I'm not a big fan of making it a habit of giving help though PMs. Too often months go by and their is another question, and I end up digging through PMs and some of them have already been deleted.

    That might work yes...

Please, ignore the PM thing, I agree - it will not work - it must be public. Brenda has a great idea there.

So you do your post, but then it would alert brenda for example that you have made this thread so IF brenda wants to or can comment she can... That might just work...

It must just be nice and visible like a button that says: "ask the specialists..." or something like that.

Agreed! I've seen anemone issues get burried in forums that I don't typically read. Occasionally I've had someone PM me asking me to take a look at a thread after there has been quit a bit of discussion on the topic.

Yeah, I also think this should be an option that is available at all time.

So lets say the thread starts out on Zoas as an example, but now the thread eventually evolves to anemone's, then there should be an ALERT button, so that any person can alert you to the post so you can intervine, as you might not have had part in the original zoa thread...

    Make sense?

Great, so it is done... Viper - is this possible? What do you need to implement this.

Also another thing that is wrong, is someguys who only have google experience. Say for example I have a sick white nemmie, I know I can trust the answer of the anenome police, where as someone telling me to feed it from something they read on some other thread, even though the googlers are trying to help, I can take their answer into consideration. Basically if there was a label to id the guru's from the googlers. Something where the police answer can be taken more seriously from the googlers.

True Magman. That is why I think the "police" must be nominated and others must vouch that they actually do know what the hell they are talking about...

I cannot really make any comments on SPS for example as I never kept it. I know what an Acropora looks like, and monti and cats paw and birds nest all of that, but I am nowhere on them, so I obviously cannot advise on it.

I think also it must be MASA members with some rep, and has been around a bit, and a known name... That is the only way we would know whether they know what they are talking about...

How did we know Brenda knows what she is talking about? Same with the rest...

I think the PM button works just fine. I often get a PM to please check out a thread and give input. I then read the thread a give my thoughts. But this normally comes from reefers that are not newbies.

I think the main issue is the newbie. He needs to feel confident that the advice he is receiving is from someone with experience and knowlage. This is where the rep system should play it's part.
