What is the best suited fish to buy or catch for your tank, an adult or juvenile, and adjusts quicker to your tank and feed. I am more talking about your harder species to keep, like butterflies, idols, maderins etc. Say I see one in the LFS, both are in the same condition, do I go for the adult or the juvi?

Juvi- they are cheaper and can acclimitise faster.

On the other hand- Adults who lived in captivity is less prone to disease, transport etc..

But on an adult you do not know if he/she is in their last days etc

That really depends on the fish IMO and also your tank.

A juvi in a new tank on its own may take to the tank easier (especially if its a smaller tank) however if there are bigger fish already in the tank it may be too threatened to compete for food.

    There are many factors!

I have im my experience found that smaller/younger idols feed and adapt to tank life and feed easier, however when it came to tangs, especially introducing a second or third tang, the bigger ones (older and more boysterous) faired better.

    Many other factors as well....

    I personally think the juvi.

All the fish in my tank are juvi's. I dont have the expensive fish that you are talking about. My fish went through a ROUGH time in the last few weeks and they all 100%

i agree with malins line of thought, there are so many factors and you have to take it on a fish by fish basis.

Personally i really like the adult colour forms of many of the angels and thus would rather get an adult, but they often dont ship well, so its mainly juvis that you see in store
