administering Antibiotics to a Seahorse

Hi all,

Having a serious problem with one of my seahorses, its suffering from GBD (Gas bubble Disease) and pouch emphysema.

I've had to remove the gas by from the pouch by "massage", but the bubble on the tail had the be "pricked" use a hyperdermic (SP?) needle use for insuline ( the smallest needle available) and the air gently pressed out. I've had to do this several times over the last 2-3 weeks.

I'm now treating it in a small hospital tank using Diamox, as suggested on Seahorse.org, but i've also noticed he has a infection on/in his tail now. I got some antibiotic liquid from my LFS and he suggested I mix it with his food, but he's not eating well now, only had 2 mysis shrimp.

My Q. Is there any other way I can administer the antibiotic?

I'm not sure of the make/type of the antibiotic.

If seahorses are like marine fish then they constantly have to take in water to prevent dehydration so the guys should also be taking in the meds in the water. Maintain the doage recommende by the pony forum.

When you say an infection on the tail, is it redenning or look like there is a fungus?

You can dab the wound with a bit on mercurochrome to help with a secondary infection. Maybe add some methylene blue AKA protozin. This is a common fungicide but also acts as an oxygen carrier and an anti stress

Just maintain the dosage reccomended on the forum and keep up with water changes.

Thanks Tony, definately an infection, 2 little saws that are red and a little pus coming out. will keep trying.
 
CLean the wounds with mercurochrome and add some methylene blue to the water

Hi Tony

I moved the pony back to the DT that same night, he didn't eat then or last night, but he did eat a little this morning. Thought he might be better off in the DT with his mate, as he was extremely stressed in the QT, he got a total of 2 day in the diamox, and 2 diamox pouch flushes.

As he was not eating and really didn't think he was going to make the night before last,so I injected litterally a half a drop of the antibiotic into one of the bubbles on his tail. well he is still allive, but not well, he still got a boyancy problem, but at least he can now swim down a little and hook on something........

Now that he is starting to feed again, I will try the antibiotics in the food and hopefully it does its magic......perhaps a diamox pouch flush too.

Shaun. I think that's any fish. Unfortunately we have no-one to take fish to if they get sick.
 
i think there is a vet in jhb that specialises in fish, will check i remember something mentioned at a Koi get together
 
RIP Little Friend

Hi All

Got home this even to found that my sick seahorse had giving up on the fight to stay alive:(

When I got home yesterday he was just swimming around the bottom, thought it wasn't a good sign as he normally couldn't swim down and was always on the water surface, now it was like he was weighted to the bottom....

Its usual for the mate to die soon after, really hope this is not my case.

Ah no man, sorry to hear Lighty. Hope the other one will be ok? Can't you get a mate for it?

Really sorry to hear about this lIghty! I must confess - I did not advertise it - but one of my seahorses also had EXACTLY the same sickness. In my case, the "bubbles" was in the tail, and after the "bubbles" burst the skin of my little pony, the pony too died.
I have one pony left.
This one is as healthy as can be.... and surviving awesomely.

I was not able to get a replacement for the one that died yet.

My sincerest feeling go out to you, mate!

Thx Jacques, really sad about it, put hours in every night and made sure he ate a bit, I suppose all you can do is try your best. just hope his mate doesn't die, this morning she didn't want to eat, will just keep trying....

Worst thing of all is, when I got home she had wrapped herself around his dead body, almost like she comforted him and she didn't want to leave his side.....:(

Anyone that says these little creatures don't have a heart, don't know squat.
