I am looking for the following stuff... I know I have mentioned it way back when, but my supplies are finished and I would not like to buy it from the Lfs again as I paid a lot of money for it...

This is what I want:

1.) Phosphate Media- quite a biggish bottle (Not the Fluid)

2.) Iodene

3.) Strontium

I would also like to know any Ideas as to the Following additives:
a.) Magnesium
b.) whatever else I need to get

1.) Phosphate - Get the Seachem one from Liaquat (Obi-Wan)

a.) Magnesium - Use Epsom Salts.

No seriously, doesn't using only Epsom Salt give you some sort of imbalance?

But what about that whole ionic imbalance story?
Just kidding. Yeah it is true I suppose, the preferred magnesium supplement is magnesium chloride and not magnesium sulphate (epsom salts). Apparently a build up of sulphate can be detrimental to your system. But in my opinion, magnesium is not used up in great amounts in the average system so once you reach your required magnesium level then to maintain it will not require huge amounts of dosing. Add to that your regular water changes then I really don't think you have much to worry about. My crazed opinion.

Dude, Hennie Landman uses Epsom Salts and his corals are freakishly HUGE. He has nothing bad to say about it.

Where do you see Guru's in this thread? You've been drinking again haven't you?

The Seachem phosphate media comes in 2 sizes (I think). The one I bought was R300 and something. Put it in a phosphate reactor and bob's your uncle.

Don't know anything about Iodine and Strontium as I don't use it.

Don't know anything about Iodine and Strontium as I don't use it.
Will pm Midas Blenny, but in case any of the gusrus can tell me if I can buy it from a chemist, this thread still stays open for discussions...LoL

I pay R120.00 for a bottle of Red Sea Iodene and R135.00 for a bottle of Red Sea Strontium

Pure Reef Supplements are much cheaper than that, I think they cost in the region of about R80 a bottle. I am not too sure if any of our sponsors stock this item so best ask midasblenny for one of his distributors.

I can't remember the size of the phosphate media bottle, I have thrown it away, best to send a PM to Obi-Wan so he can enlighten you.

Hi Sean - I am not a guru at all. BUT here's my opinion - I use Epsom Salts in my tank (have started using it after investigating the addition of magnesium, to kill off the bryopsis algae I had plaguing me. I also use the "Alpha" brand iodine that you can get from any chemist. I mix the small 50ml iodine bottle in a 250ml bottle I had (a commercial iodine supplement), with 200ml RO water. I then doze +-30-40ml about 4-5 times a week. Not everyone believes in using iodine. I just do.
Hope that this has helped you make up your mind about epsom salts/iodine.
BTW: personally, I think that any real chemical imbalance could possibly be diluted when you do water changes, and also by the water removed from your system when you clean out the skimmer-cup.
BUT, hey, that's me!
