Hi Guys, I have a question in regards to live rock, I have noticed on many threads, that when one adds live to a new system, you always add the live rock first, That is before adding the substrate, why is this dont in this way?
Why cant you add the live rock on top of the substrate ?

    Thanks

Nothing wrong with adding substrate before your liverock,as long as you first put in saltwater before the substrate. Does that answer your question?

You can do it any which way you like. The only issue is if u stir up substrate you will have issues with your water quality with all the gunk that is released.

But you can add liverock at any point, you will just stress out the fish thats all

The liverock needs to be on a stable base to prevent it toppling over. If you place it on the substrate fish/inverts will dig underneath it causing the rock to topple. Falling liverock can damage corals and potentialy crack your tank.
Best thing it to scape the tak first, making sure the rock is stable secure (cable ties and pratleys putty helps if you plan on having tall columns and arches) and then add thesubstrate.

I agree with 459b, that is probably the main reason why live rock is added first.
