Hey Guys Im Starting my first Tank.

Getting it on Thursday evening, and just want to say i have been reading alot on this forum, will probably have loads of questions for all, its a small tank but 45*45*45 cube, would like to ask some opinions, i would like to have a reef tank( i think thats with fish and coral) what would be the best substrate to use most of this hobbies seems to be planning aheahd and i know i might be getting ahead of myself but would liek your input, the coral i like the Mushroom corals (Discosoma),Leather corals (Sarcophyton) and the Kenya tree, ‘Nephthya’ (Capnella), also i would like to get in the future and one day a Anemone(when im big lol) on the fish side i know im limited with tank size but think for now my plan is Chromis or damsels, clownfish and maybe some Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica)

any opinions, and any advise on what i should look out for.
also a good pet store in West Rand (roodepoort) area in JHB would be great

    thanks in advance guys&girls

Enjoy the addiction. To start off with your first question, Aragonite is the substrate what we use mostly in this hobby. It should be about 20mm to 30mm more or less in your display tank. The smaller size granules is better, even fiji pink sugar fine looks even nicer (my opinion). Don't go too course as they tend to become detris traps and cause havoc with your water parameters. It is a good step to plan before anything else and don't be scared to ask questions as we are all here to help. Just another tip, invest in a good skimmer about 1.5 to 2 times the rated volume of your tank, it is one of the most important items to have for your tank.

Live sand direct from an existing aquarium, yes. If you are referring to the bags that say live sand, not worth the extra cost. Rather go for a normal bag of aragonite or fiji pink. Another option is to look in the For Sale section and see if you can maybe pick up sand for a bargain. Remember that you are going to be placing your tank through a cycling process and this tends to kill of most living critters in 'live sand' etc. Once your cycle period is complete you can then ask some members for a cup of sand to help seed your sand with a different variety of bacteria.

Great thanks, will have a look on the for sale section For a tank my size i was thinking substrate of about 2cm thick, or would you recommend thicker or thinner.

Hey Guys so got my setup this past weekend, currently just running it with normal water to check for any cracks and or leaks all seem fine, added white vinegar to the system yesterday to help clean everything up, got a little bit of live rock with it, and i saw some aptasia on it wen i collected the tank, so have placed it in some vinegar and water, ( or should i just throw it away?), also noticed a leak in the sump between compartment 2 and 3 the leak is internal, so the water is not running over the top of the partition ( was thinking of getting some marine silicone and just sealing it) good news is Protein Skimmer,Return Pump, Power head, light ,overflow, thermostat and heater all seem to be working great!

you can just run a bit of silicone over that internal leak.

Good luck with your tank. Most importantly IMO is to enjoy it.
Nice choice in corals to start with. As for fish, I would get the Chromis and clowns, firefish as well but rather stay away from Damsels as they can be aggressive.

Hey there! Welcome and good luck with the setup! I'm in Roodepoort too, which area are you in? Maybe we can swap coral frags when your setup has gotten going.
