there is a cost to always going green, but if i can stop pouring saltwater down the drain, i would feel better

would be nice to be totally recycle ones water. prefilters are about R60 and the membrane about R200 odd, might not be the best but i get 0 tds from them

Surely there is a easier way of disposing of salt water. ie evaporation?

TDS of tap water is somewhere from 80 to 150, depending on where you live

TDS of saltwater is off the scale. Above a thousand. So for argument sake take is at thousand, so its about 10 times worst than the tap water. So your membranes will last a tenth of what it is doing currently. So you are looking at replacing membranes and pre-filters at around every month. YIKES.

Not worthwhile. Will cost a lot more than the tap water we use.

How much do we pay now to the municipalities for a kilolitre of water? Compare that price to the cost of replacing membranes...

ALSO Do not put your TDS meter in salt water. Could stuff it up for good.

Salt will be left in filters that you through away anyway.
plus salt will clog up the filters FAST i think.
also what about the waste water the ro unit produces from the salt water filtering?

we get the first 6kilo-liters free :)

its not about cost, its about conservation, but its not practical i know
but based on my usage i would get 4months + from one membrane :)

got too much time on my hands, maybe i should experiment, and get an old unit form marco and test

What exactly is the end goal here?

Purely minimising your foot print ie less waste in the environment.
    or
Reuse the water there by using less water.

I tried testing the TDS of salt water once. Meter very quickly said 999X10 which means its way more than 10 thousand. Found this on the net "Sea water has a TDS content of approximately 35000 mg/L."

So that would mean the membrane would last 350 times less. I reckon you would have to replace the membrane after just a few litres.

TDS of salt water is around 35000 PPM. Salt water has a salinity of 35 PPT. TDS is PPM so multiply the 35 PPT by 1000 to get PPM.

You still have the same amount of waste material, its just in a more concentrated form.

Secondly, lots of wasted energy here - energy to make all the membrane filters you are going to be using, energy to drive your RO pump. I'll guarrantee your nett carbon footprint is going up, not down
