Does anyone know if one can use the normal 50mm gate valve like we have on the reef octopus skimmers, flip it so that the screw is facing horizontal and use it to restrict the tank overflow? Do these valves leak out of the screw section if you do that?

Thanks. I will get one and try. A bit of an expensive test but hopefully it will work without leaks. I do have a ball valve but you just cant get that fine tuning right to keep the waterlevel in the overflow constant.

ask astore for inline gate valves, like a ball valve but like a flat gate valve, also a butterfly valve might work

if i may ask, why restrict water leaving the tank? it sounds like a potential point of failure, since its an overflow i presume why not regulate the water coming in?

slowing the flow doesnt guarantee silence, a better design does, i have always had a super silent tank, my radions fan make more noise then my overflow

If you using bean animal or herbie overflow, you need to restrict the outlet..

yes the beananimal does cater for the pipe blocking etc with the emergency overflow, i am just worried if its one exit as i have had nori block a overflow pipe in the valve

I have a skinny overflow and the water falling to the bottom makes the noise. So restrict the overflow to damn up water inside the overflow to remove the noise of the water dropping.

    Howzit Marius,
My current tank has a skinny overflow, exact same issue with the water falling over making a noise, fortunately the overflow plumbing came with the gate valve. It had a leak but @ADVdiver was around on saturday and sorted the leak, adjusted the valve to dam up the water in the overflow as you stated and it's now really quite.
i am however a bit concerned as @dallasg mentioned of a blockage which could potentially lead to a flooding....

A gate valve has its hasstes aswell, they are a bugger to set, and when you clean them you have to start all over again.. i protect my overflow with perspex with machined slots to limit any solids from entering that can cause a blockage, far more accurate than a ballvalve but expensive in comparision.

Well I actually against all odds, managed to get the flow rates correct with only using the one ball valve. Left it running overnight to see if the water level in my temporary plastic sump changed and glad to say that it was all at the same levels this morning. Now just to drain the tank and start the RO fill.

put a mark with permanent marker on the handle and the valve for ease of setting for future.. well done :)
