iv been contemplating making the last sump compartment into a frag tank..it was initially going to be a top up reservoir but now I'm thinking of building a seperate one..have space for a 24litre reservoir..wondering if it will be sufficient for a 250-300litre system
To give you an idea, my tank is a total of about 200 liter, with an open top and a 7 liter RO reservoir. In winter I have to fill the reservoir daily, in summer about every second day.
Keep in mind you don't want too much RO in case your float valve fails and all RO gets dumped in your tank. Using this online calculator, if you keep 250 liters at 1.026, and 24 liters of fresh water gets added, the result will be 1.0237, which is still safe. If you want to go bigger, use the calculator to find the limit. It is quite accurate; I use it when adding new fish to my QT, to drop the salinity to the same as the water in the bag.
Otherwise add another float switch to your ATU as a failsafe incase 1st float gets stuck or incorporate a time delay relay only allowing the pump to run a certain time before it switches off. My system is 500L and i have a 30litre resevoir. This lasts about 5 days before i have to fill it again. As i have an open top and fans over my sump with STC controller for evaporative cooling. So my evaporation rate is a bit higher. If your planning a canopy your evap would be much less than an open top. But i think 25L should be more than enough for u.
