Hi. If you watch FTK's or TANKED....they always say polyester resin (fibreglass resin) is toxic to fish and inverts over time....that said I have seen guys use it in their tanks with now ill affects....

Most fake stuff are made from something called polygen (not sure if thats the correct spelling).....

Mmm really.. iv googled it and some say that once the resin hardens and the smell is gone after a couple of days in the sun, should be good to go into an aquarium..

I do not know anything about Fiberglass, but why not try epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin, once it has hardened, is like glass.

Look, a background that I made in '96 (fresh water tank, with discus fish):

    - Foam poliurethan
    - Epoxy resin

if you find a good enough paint that is safe for aquarium use that would be perfect to go over the background/resin.

Poliuretan foam is used in construction for insulation of windows, doors, etc.

Epoxy resin believe that you can find on the manufacturers of paints, paints and thinners. If you find quality resin food (created for food industry) is perfect.
