Friend of mine wants to go smaller because he finds it too much maintenance for such a big tank. He's thinking of selling it but wants to know if he'll be able to move it without cracking. The glass was brought and built at the spot its standing now.

    Size is 2.8 x 1.2w x 900h and is 20mm thick glass.

Would he be able to move such a big tank without cracking it and is if so how much can he sell it for?
    Any advise?

unfortunately you will never know until it is moved .
i moved a 2.5 x 1m x 0,8 tank , and it was moved with some battled but it got done.
was setup at new position, and was left to rest for 3 days before attempting anything.
on day 3 the base cracked , nothing caused it , we put it done to the stress of the move on the tank.
was on a 50mm square tube frame , with 20 mm polystriene and stand was perfectly level, so it wasnt that.
stress on glass might only show afterwards - which was my case.

Problem with that size is it won't fit through a normal doorway, so you'll have to bear that in mind when trying to get it out of the house.

He has huge doors so that won't be a problem.

Dean, what was the thickness of the glass?

glass is 15mm, when i spoke to LFS that helped me , they said unfortunately with glass, it can develop a stress fracture , and then when put under pressure , can give way.

they needed about 8-10 guys just to move the tank , so this is going to be one major move , maybe go with what @RiaanP said, and cut and re assemble , will be easier to move and not so stressful, but labour involved to remove , clean and re assemble will be a problem.

its always fun with big tanks :)

I guess the safest bet will be to cut it and reassemble it because I got a feeling it will crack when trying to move it.

Gonna ask him to give it to me because nobody gonna want to buy it anyway. ;)

Can use it for my turtles. I can't afford to maintain such a huge marine tank.

if it was 800mm wide, I would have bought it. And in Gauteng.

How much do you think he can get for a tank that size?
