    Hello,

I have started my first marine tank last year 1 December 2012 and so far I am loving the hobby. Very relaxing and involved.
Currently I have 10 fish and 14 corals. All doing well.

I have attached some pictures of the tank. Tank has been running now for 6 months.
Sorry for the pictures was taken with phone cam.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated on do's and don'ts here
    Thanks

Recently I have upgraded the 2 Sun 5000L wave pumps to a SICCE Wave Surfer with 2 Voyager 4 6000L wave Pumps.

I like the macro algaes in the tank, the Regal will like it.

What are the dimensions of the tank, what's your maintanance regime like?

IT is a normal 4Ft tank, so 122cm long, 45cm wide and 55cm tall.

    maintenance:
    Weekly water change of 50L
2 days after water change I will add seachem calcium, iodine and trace elements twice a week.
    once a week clean glass
every 2 days change filter sock
every 3-4 days clean the skimmer cup and quick wipe of glass inside sump.
    NO DSB.

    Water:
    ALK: 12
NO3: 2 - can't get it lower than this. Feeding sparingly
    MG: 1500
    Cal: between 420 and 450
    PO4: untraceable with Salifert

I am struggling with a bit of green hair algae on the rocks.
Running Activated carbon mixed with seachem Phosgard.
    Also running seachem Matrix.

I have been running the 2 sun wave pumps 5000L per hour and these pumps do rock if you need flow.
The SICCE pumps are cool, but now I don't know if flow is enough in my tank anymore with the pumps on/off with the wave surfer as only one pump runs at a time?

Only getting 0.4 times tank volume flow every 1min

0.4 times sounds a bit low to me.

In terms of the GHA, the tank is still relatively new and the GHA will eventually subside if you keep to your maintanance regime. How much liverock do you have currently?

Personally I think you need to look at your biological filtration and see if it's good enough, no DSB and it does not look like you run any carbon source. Although even without any of the above I am still of the opinion that the algae problem will over time sort itself out. My tank ran for many month with GHA and it eventually cleared up, without me changing anything in my maintanance routine(except doing less frequent water changes but some might not agree with this).

I ran activated carbon 500g and change every 2 weeks, mixed with 150g seachem phos.
In total the system have about 20-23Kg live rock.
One rock in the tank had lots of GHA on it, but last night when I checked I saw that there are no more GHA on it anymore, but a few rocks still have GHA
Pictures are of about 2 weeks ago.

I have a DIY coil de-nitrator with 50 meters coil and 50cm long chamber. I am getting a total of 140 liters per month 0 nitrate outflow of the coil.
Does this seem to be a good output of the de-nitrator?
flow is about 1 drop per second. When I increase the flow to 2 drops per second nitrate shoots up to 10ppm.
Design is of this link http://saltaquarium.about.com/b/2013/04/04/diy-coil-denitrator-plans.htm
I have opted to put the coil outside the chamber and bio-balls inside the chamber. Completely sealed unit. Cannot open

I have updated the Sump a bit from a 2 foot to 3 foot.
Added a reef Octopus Ozone unit to the system. 0.25mg unit
Ozone will run for 15min every 3 hours.
Had some problems with the substrate, did not syphon for the last 6 months due to reefers indicating that shallow bed does not have to be syphoned and was struggling with nitrates, do not believe everything you read regarding substrate and syphoning a shallow bed.
After syphoning shallow bed looks great, clean and even fuller with life.
The gunk that comes out is scary stuff and after 50L water change, nitrates has dropped from 25ppm to 7ppm.
It has stayed on 7ppm for the last 2 weeks now. Hopefully this weekend it will be under 5ppm.
I do like some nitrates in the water as the system is a softy dominated tank.
I have a toadstool coral that is not doing so well, so any advice would be appreciated.
It is in pic 2 in the middle.

If you look at previous pictures the toadstool look very happy, now it just stays closed up.
Do you reefers think it will be better to frag the toadstool and see if some will survive rather than loosing the whole coral?

One more thing the finger leather in the attached pick is also not looking too happy. It sits half way up on the side of the tank.
Do these corals require a lot of light?

This system has been running for a year and 3 months now and have only lost a anemone and one fish(mandarin).

Hey I need some help with fan cooling.

I have 2 x 220V metal 12" fans with built in heat sensor. Will I get more cooling from running the 2 fans on the main display or in the sump or vise versa.

Do I need more live rock currently 23Kg for 350L total system volume.
