I had the pleasure of seeing a very unique marine setup. A reef pond !

On my travels I stumbled across this awesome system by per chance.

The owner Peter Bee, has set this up in his petshop.

Although the pond is a great attraction, the pond is Peter's baby and he finds great pleasure in trying different ideas and methodologies in this system. He is very accomodating and gave me a run down of system.

The system comprises of the Reef Pond and a huge refugium, totally 23 000 litres.

Both parts of the system have natural sunlight as the lighting source.

The corals, clams and fish are allowed to live as naturally as possible in this system.

Some of the inmates, that I saw (sure there are loads that never come out of the reef) Personal favorite: Purple Tang :), Moorish Idols, Copperband, Couple of Large Angels - Semi-Circle and I think, a blue face ?? Seahorses, various damsels, loads of clams, brittle stars and all sorts of corals.

Interesting point of this system, is there is no temperature regulation, although the refugium is outdoors. This shows how large volumes of water are far more forgiving and stable.

The system has to endure cold Joburg winters and the fairly hot summers with the infamous thunderstorms. Yet parameter flucuations are minium.

The refuge houses lava rock, caulepra and all sorts of other marine critters. The lava rock once seeded makes a great alternative to Live rock. I would estimate the system must have a couple of tons of lava rock.

And the 20 000 litre upgrade is in progress :69:, making the total in excess of 55 000 litres. The refugium is going be doubled in size and 2 x 5000 and 1 x 10000 litre JoJo's are being added to the system. One of these will be setup as a DSB.

Once again, Peter thank you for letting me share this with the local reefkeeping community and the rest of world.

Good luck and may this reef grow beyond your widest dreams.

Members keep your eye on this thread, as the upgrades should be completed in the next month or so.

Interesting! Looks great! BUT - why does the water look to "brown"? Reflection off the wall?
