You probably heard about this in mid to late 2013, with RLSS's DB10i and Reef Octopus POV having their skimmers reviewed on various, international websites.

We are very proud to bring the first of its kind to South Africa in the RED DEVIL MONSKER XXXXP - Professional Open Volute Skimmer Range.

So what is an Open Volute Design?

Simply put, this is when the "volute" of the pump is removed. This could also be termed "Volute less," however; it is most commonly called "Open Volute" in the aquarium space.

A volute is the opening and channel where the water/air is drawn into the pump. In traditional pump designs we normally call it the venturi part of the skimmer pump.

    Why is this design advantageous?

The most unique feature of this design is having the pump inverted, WITHOUT any restrictions, with only the base plate used as the volute.

This position of the pump allows for increased contact time and produces finer bubbles when compared with the traditional, upright skimmer pump design.

The inverted placement of the pump also aids in providing even dispersion into the chamber body. This a superior way, delivering the output of the skimmer pumps into the reaction chamber; unlike traditional methods of forcing the output into the chamber, creating a turbulent vortex. But, make no mistake that the "traditional" method works very well in removing DOC's.

When removing the volute we simply allow unrestricted suction into the pump, greatly aiding in pump efficiency. We also allow maximum water/air mixture deploying this open design.

Another advantage is that the output of the skimmer pump is not restricted through another reduced output into the reaction chamber, but uniformly distributed to the base of the skimmer, thus filling the base.

Water/air mixture is then further diffused though the bubble plate which reduces turbulence into the reaction chamber. The bubble plate also allows for a gentle rise of the bubbles into the reaction chamber.

With these two processes, we now ensure the reaction chamber is completely and uniformly filled with very fine bubbles which ultimately produce a superior protein skimmer.

With no volute we must not forget that your skimmer will always be operating efficiently as we can now forget about debris and filamentous algae's getting stuck inside the volute, therefore hampering the skimmer's performance.

That one is for 800-2500L, never a bad idea to have an over rated skimmer IMO

The biggest boy in the open volute range is the 2500P rated for up to 2500L.

We have bigger but not in the open volute design for 3500L
