What would happen to the halide if it gets splashed on whilst it has no cover? BOOM??

NO, as the glass acts as a UV barrier! remember Meks tank when one of his tubes outer glass broke, fried all his corals on the one side.

there is no "special glass" used for these units it is merley tempered. the refraction of the glass used is what limits the uv from penetrating through to the corals, if you run that bulb without a cover glass of some sort you will burn coral.. i lost lps (frogspawn) that were placed directly below my 150mh when the glass was left off..

Glass not tempered will shatter when the heat gets too high as is normal with halides-I had this before. Tempered glass is normal glass treated with a chemical and baked afterwards.

Interesting comments above. I ran all my mh without glass covers since day one. Even the ones i put in a couple of months ago i took the covers off. Still running perfect without any salt creep nor burning of coral

depends on the globe type, if single or double ended.
As far as I know, the single ended got a UV filter as part of the globe. And double ended do not.

You do occasionally get the 150w mh that are encased in an "envelope" like the 250w and 400w, particularly the SE bulbs, sure its not that type?

there is a special glass, which I use regularly, there are boron silicate, sodium silicate glass for eg. some of which can handle high pressure and temperature.

I made my own oaks coffee table with a glass top 19mm tempered, try get that.

lastly we use glass in our pressure vessels.

Its very very difficult to get tempered glass that's less then 4mm, almost impossible in s.a. Apperently we don't have the correct equipment to make it. Some glass companies will tell you they can try but if it cracks you got to pay and the chances of making a 3mm are very slim. Try fordsburg glass got mine from them and they were the Cheapest around.
