Don't know the lamp, but a 150W on a 2ft thats probably only 400mm deep will be way to much power is only used for LPS and softies, perhaps 4x 39W T5?

Thanks lighty. Here are the specs. the tank is 600x600x600. I am wanting to hang the the lamp above the tank, say 50cm above the tank. The tube alone is around R900.Does anyone have suggestions for good mh setups and better prices.Possibly in Durban area
There is a reason for me doing it this way.Im adding a section to the side of the tank(back) that will house macro algae only (a second bio only refugium will be located in the sump). The mh will therefore light the tank and the macro refugium thus the reason for the light hanging above the tank and killing 2 birds with one stone.

I have used a 150 watt 14,000k DE HQI MH Bulb on a 430 mm high tank, and a 530 mm high tank for a few years with excellent results. The bulb was about 150 mm above the tank. I kept SPS, LPS, a mixture of soft coral, and anemones, with excellent results. I have not used the 10,000k bulb.

hey radar...check up the lighting thread for some ideas or look at my nano cheap metal halide solution http://www.marineaquariumsa.com/showthread.php?t=12277...however as 50cm high i dont think a 150w mh will be enough for your sump and refugium/maybe you can make it work with a 10000k globe as i'm using 20000k which has less power(lumen output) generally. dont you want to try the same thing in 250w?

150 will be enough for lps and softies in that size tank not sure how well sps will do in that light as its a bit low for them so you wont get great growth and colour out of sps under 150w.

costs about the same really initially...i would suggest a 250w 14000k or 20000k and your sorted...but since its also for lighting the refugium not bluer than 14000k.

i'm using a 150w 20000k(venture globe) on a 42lt nano so it should get pretty hot and i was considering putting fans but luckily there it a window close to the ceiling on top of the tank...this ensures lotsa air moves past the open top tank...so no need for fans etc...temps reached highest 30 once but only after the halide was on for over eight hours so usually at nine o clock at night i top up with cool water and temps go down to 28 degrees...stays low until same time next day...so its very very tank dependant. if you having major heat issues then simply raise the light a bit to improve airflow under it.
