If you want to make a DSB then you need to find very fine grained sand, like the same size as white sugar grains, some use aragonite, some use playsand etc. Are you putting a DSB in your sump?

      Substrate for your display tank?

That looks fine. If you wanted to put a DSB in there you would have to remove all 3 of those glass dividers and glue the two outer ones onto the bottom of the tank so that the water is pushed over the top of them.

That sounds fine, you do not HAVE to have a DSB, a lot of people run their tanks without them, it's entirely up to you. I don't use a DSB any more. My sump also only has the skimmer, return pump and some live rock. You might find a lot of dirt collecting around the bottom of the live rock, try and siphon that out once a month if you can.

Just one thing, move the heater into the first or middle compartment, because if something happens like the overflow pipe gets blocked and the return pump empties the chamber it is in then the heater will overheat and explode.
