I have been thinking of getting a serval, caracal or bobcat
What is the law on keeping them in gauteng?
Where can I apply for the correct permits?

Shabeer at Terrace Rd vet has a caracal cat. He should know which permit is needed (Tel: 011 524 6011).

Some of these cats do not mind water at all.
Doubt if you will be happy if the serval takes out your Gen tang.

These Servals are not that domesticated. Males especially will mark their territory, that is the inside of your house. They will take out all smaller animals around the house. Might even eat your fish as they do not care about water and actually like to swim.

@Irma might be able to help.

Sorry but I do not know. I would assume that you would need a wildlife permit.
Personally, I would prefer them to stay in the wild as nature intended. It is always sad for me to see a wild animal domesticated just for human enjoyment. Just my opinion. Trying not to judge and you need to do what you feel.
The video shows the 2 cats playing but it does not tell you if the serval is ever allowed outside as it would probably run off and eat someone else's pet.

That's a serval playing imagine that pouncing on your child when it plays and if it wanted to that cat would be history.
A caracal and bobcat would swallow that little thing whole it will be liking keeping a lionfish with goldfish ;)
Keeping these cats in the states is a big thing, we stayed on a plot and our neighbour bred caracal for the US market, it was so cruel all those dumb people wanted these wild animals but didn't want to live with the consequences so our neighbour used to have to de claw and de fang them when they were little kittens otherwise he couldn't sell them.
Its your decision, personally I believe its cruel and asking for trouble, unless you have the space, time, dedication, etc that it takes to keep these animals but then it becomes more a task than a pet, so what's the point?

The Cat in the video is a savanah cat they are illegal in SA. We have the serval in SA and the savanah is a mixed breed between the serval and a domestic house cat. I own 2 Bengal cats and thats the most exotic cats i could find before going over to wild cats. THe Bengal cat is a mixed breed between an asian Leopard and a domestic cat. I have a friend that has a ''Rooikat'' and they are very distructive they will break anything and everything they will tear your curtains and your couches. they are not meant for domestic use and they can be very aggresive towards children.. Just my opinion. I would def recomend a Bengal cat they are amazing. You can Pm me for details im expecting a registerd litter in 60 days.

I saw some Bengal cats at a show once, amazing looking. How are they to keep domestically?

And when he goes outside as he wants and wonders into the neighbours yard and attacks their pet or even worse their child?

I strongly disliked the man, I found his breeding to be cruel and terrible so I never kept contact with him, so don't have his details sorry.

what you have to remember is that yes you might be able to "tame" the cat but your few hours a day of socialising the cat with other pets and children will never be able to breed out years years of wildness which is in its genes and at the end of the day it could be the friendliest pet and then just snap and do you really want that risk? I am mean you even hear of dogs turning on their owners and that's after hundreds of years of domestication.

Just to clarify, it's a hybrid between the asian leopard CAT and a domestic cat. They're just called leopard cats because of the colouration. They're not actually leopards. :whistling:

my 2c if i remember correctly, you are liable for all damage and death the animal causes, it will be put down and you will be charged
