hi

im am planning my new tank as some of you may know and now it comes down to the fish side of things

the tank is a 65x65x50(210 liter display) cube tank and i really only want 2 fish... they must both be really colorful and thats why I'm really interested in the scopes tang or the yellow tang and a colorful blenny and i was also thinking about a green or red mandarin
keep in mind that each fish will have basically 100 liters of water to themselves so i personally think it can be done

what are your guys thoughts

if you looking for a show piece tang, there are many, besides the obvious look at

there are also plenty of flasher and other wrasses which are awesome fish!
 
I think the tank will be too small for a green mandarin in the long run. The spotted psychedelic ones are a better option as they will usually move onto the frozen foods, the green mandarin will chew through a large pod population in a tank that size in no time. It may also be a little small for a tang after a while.

As Dallas said the flasher wrasses are a good choice for a tank that size. The only fish I have that I wouldn't sell is a Mc'Coskers Flasher Wrasse. A dwarf angel is a nice choice too if you can get one that doesn't nip corals.
 
Its not about the litres, its the dimensions thats the issue. You can make that tank 2m tall (800+ L) and it would still not be big enough for a tang.

Yes but you said in your first post "keep in mind that means each fish has 100L"
So thats why I said 100L is too small
Even 200L is too small for a YT
I had a YT in a 90cmx60cmx60cm, he was the size of a R5 coin when I got home and out grew the tank within 8 months
So you can keep one but not for long, not long at all
 
If you plan to add any type of Mandarin you will need a LOT of liverock to sustain them, even if they are on frozen as you cant feed enough frozen to keep the Mandarin healthy.

The amount of liverock in the tank in turn will reduce swimming space limiting stocking options further.

As soon as you have any other free swimming fish with the Mandarin then very little of the frozen food will actually reach the bottom of the tank before being eaten by the faster or larger fish.

Mandarin's are also quite slow swimmers and especially slow feeders, they tend to follow food around for a couple of seconds before actually taking a go at it, this gives the faster fish even more time to eat all the frozen food.

That's the main reason why plenty of natural food(pods in liverock) is important, people think a Mandarin that eats frozen is ok but forget the practicalities around getting the food to them.

okay i have thought it over and I'm think I'm going to go with a flame angel and 2 mandarins....i will have a decent amount in the display and lots more in the sump....will also seed the system with pods so there should be lots of them. what are your guys thoughts?
 
A single mandarin will decimate the pod population. No ways you will be able to keep up with the supply. Rock in sump does not work as the pods will not easily get to the display without you shaking them out. But with no competition for prepared foods it could work.

With enough liverock and if you can get the Mandarin to eat prepared foods then it might be ok.

Just a thought from my side, I haven't seen a lot of guys that has the restraint to keep only 2 fish in a tank...
 
I'd stay away from both the mandarins and the tangs. Some good fish for that size tank (and they're mostly small so you don't have to limit yourself to just 2 fish):

Flasher wrasses (small group is best, 1 male to multiple females)
Fairy wrasses (as above)
Halichoeres wrasses (some get big, most are small)
Gobies
Dartfish (fire "gobies")
Blennies
Cardinals
Dwarf angels (aggression may be a problem in that size tank depending on species)

I agree with this, also as per my previous post, chances of sticking to just 2 fish is unlikely and as soon as you stock up you will struggle to feed the mandarin correctly.

Trust me, it's quite stressful to always worry about your mandarin eating enough, you will spend endless hours trying to get it to feed, watching it eat, trying different foods etc. This will probably result in overfeeding the tank and lead to new stress when the tank "acts up".

Something to keep in mind with this Cube. Are you planning a rimless cube?
If this is the case then keep in mind all the smaller fish ie. Dartfish and Fire Gobies are notorious jumpers.... Theyre not a very good choice for rimless tanks.
 
Not sure why anyone would ever have a rimless/coverless tank. Tons of fish species are regular jumpers. Rimless tanks are just a recipe for dried fish and heartache.

Green clown Goby or Yellow watchman goby
1 blue Yellow tail damsel, make sure you do not take a Devil Damsel (the name says it all)
Lastly a Dusky Angel with either Flame Angel or Coral Beauty
Dusky can go with either a Flame or Coral beauty, but a Flame can not go with a coral Beauty.
 
The tank will be rimless but I might put a screen of some sort and I want to keep stocking as minimal as possible.....think that I will stay with the flame angel but I had a look at the flasher and fairy wrasses and it's not really what I'm going for....had a look at the white blenny and I really like that......any body seen these or had these.....also was thinking or having a flame angel and then like 3-4 firefish or purple firefish I would have to put a screen over but what do you guys think
