was cracking peeps.

im at the final stages of getting my tub running.

and through some discussions with a fellow reefer the topic was brought up...

SPS or SOFTIES....???? :whistling:

what do you guys reckon , just as a matter of interest...

and before i get the CTRL + C & CTRL + V 's rolling :lol: - i do understand the dynamics around keeping either or.

Ill be the odd one out and disagree- its much easier to keep sps happy when they are on their own than to mix them with softies/ lps. Whilst it can be done, its far easier to plan a tank when you consider the requirements of the livestock- eg blasting flow, low nutrients etc. Not so easy to balance this in a mixed tank.
 
I'm with Monti on this one.
Softies like nutrient rich water and this just kills SPS.
I cant get the latter to grow in my softie dominated tank, it just browns out, bleaches or gets overgrown by a softie..

One day when I do a SPS set up, it will be all about low nutrients (probably biopellets), high flow, low fish load. Exact opposite of what the softies want.
 
That's true I'm having growth and colouration on myy sps and my softies are sukkeling, think its the bio pellets
 
I disagree, both my LPS and SPS are thriving.. And i have a rather non-conventional setup.
It comes down to your husbandary skills, and ofcorse the stability of your system.
In essence you system just needs to be stable and params constant. just my 2c.
 
monti has it spot on, go with the system you like the most and plan according to that. You can mix a few softies into a sps dominated system thats run with high flow and good light, but decide what you like the most and go with that.

Nur, I'm confused, when I look at your pics I see a Softie system with LPS. Only significant bit of SPS in there is a red monti (that stuff is the exception, I've seen frags grow in my toilet).:peroni:

Go try some of the more difficult SPS (check Adee thread for examples), and then come back and tell us about your success in this regard.;):tt2:

so i see its very much a personal preference
mostly depends on what you like, flow in the tub etc etc...
just want to do it "right" from the start.
 
i have, purple tip Acro gro from a 5cm frag and now 25cm, a single green acro that i got at 1cm is now palm size and about 5cm tall, and a birds nest thats very fluffy. Forget about the green branching monti that i've been fragging and distributing. all of wich is not brown or being overgrown by softies.
But you right i dot have a setup like Adee, but then again i never said i was full SPS. or the SPS king.

The point i tried to make that it is not impossible to have a Mixed Reef, if it where then all that have mixed reefs must either be magicians, witches or wizards. in that case we should have a few Harry Potters in our midst.

Reefing is reefing, if you have a tank 60cm filled with frags or a 5m with colonies, you still after the same enjoyment, pleasure or maybe even to make a buck.

So please tell us newbies how often you do a WC on you toilet and what your params are then we too can have the success you have, is it with NS or Saltmix? Very intrigued by this.

I'm the person that was told by Reef gurus that my tank wont last 5 months because i dont have a sump and my filtration and skimmer is inadequate.
16 months down the line i can go away for 5 weeks and return to a pristine tank with absolutely no losses. You dont see me telling people their tanks are Toilets!
I cant seem to find any pics of your setup, is it as successful as Adee's, that the reason u referred to his tank? Why arent you propergating that everyone Loses their T5's, MH's and even LED's to go Natural Sunlight like he was until recently?

Funny- in my original post which you disagreed to, I never said it was impossible either?;) I agree that husbandry and knowledge is key, but I stand by what I said- it is far far easier to keep sps on their own than to mix with other corals. It is rare that one sees a mixed reef where the sps are truly spectacular. Note I say rare, not impossible.
