Who has taken their time - honestly

I was talking with a friend and something struck the thought, it is known right across everyone who has a reef aquarium that the one of the key elements to achieving your desired reef aquarium correctly is to have it happen over time.

We all know there is certain time frames required for cultivation etc...How many people can HONESTLY say that they have waited a few weeks between progresses as the general prescribed thing to do and how many have HONESTLY waited the approx. 6-9months before puting in your first anemone?
 
I still think I'm not "ready" for mine - and I'd lllloooovvvveeee to get one ... But my current tank is just over 18 months but been in and out the hobby from 1985 when my dad used to keep marines....
 
ive waited just over 5 months before looking at corals as i have had nitrate issues and same period of time for the pod populatioon to increase before adding sensitive fish which i would like to keep later on. i will wait a while longer before i even look at a nennie although i would love to keep one again.

i think once you appreciate the value of getting your system to a point that can take these sorts of live stock (nennies, mandarins clams etc) then you dont rush the issue. Its no hardship watching beautiful fish while my dsb matures.
 
Let us take a minute to look at it, for all the new guys who have either just started or are about to start (sadly, this includes myself as I have added dodne like every other newbie and got LS too soon)...Look at the DT of the people who have waited, it pays dividends in the long run.

Could those who have waited, post pics to prove the value.

I reckon we may be onto a big point to be proven as to how much importance it is to be patient - and I am not ashamed to admit I messed up in the rookie mistake of rushing for LS in my tank. Any rookie who doesn't know why, will just buy. Bad mistake, I am just very lucky not to have lost any LS.

I can't say if only, but as does everyone I am sure, we all eventually get bigger tanks and do it right the second time around...

LOL - Now I am not one that waits like everyone else but I have now learnt my lesson

I have my new tank up & running for over a week & not one fish has been put in....

I am watching the worms & copods in the tank but still need to wait for the sand & DSB to mature first.

But I do believe that things don't need to take years - I had tons of copods in my tank & that was after 3 - 4 months - then again I did buy proper live rock & got some DSB sand which I put into my tank.
 
Tanks been running over 6 years and still doesn't have an anemone...
 
i have a 1.8 tank and i only have 4 fish
the tank have been running for over a year
 
i dont think it is totally a time thing ,however dsbs take six or more months to fully mature and if you overload early you create a bad one and you have liverock that absorbes the phosphates etc from too much bioload and you just have a worse tank because of it.
 
On my previous tank I waited 4 months before adding the first fish or coral.

Waiting for things to mature is torture in the begining, now that I have a little experience and been educated a bit more - it is kinda like half the fun of it. I have done things in reverse unfortunately but and correcting my ways, I don't intend doing any more to my tank until a few months have passed and I have some maturity in my filtration - between now and then, I will replace my baby Queen skimmer with something a bit better and possibly add more LR, but other than that I am going to wait...that is my intension and I am sure I will accomplish that from now on.

i waited 8 months before adding my GBTA .... 18 months later she is bigger and as happy as can be !
 
Busy working on my ligting as we speak, removing the 2 30W T8's and fitting 4 x 54 T5's. All I could afford, maybe get better globes and more lights as time goes on, but for now - every bit of improvement I can make without interfering for the worse to me DT is priority for me...I have had my fair share of "uit-kak" about rushing into things, I wanted to do it my way but that was wrong, so after getting "coached" into the right direction by many MASA mambers (thank you all, I don't need to name you individually) I am on the road to success I think:yeahdude:

Well played on taking the "uitkak" the right way and looking after the inhabitants of your tank as the first priority
 
upgrading slowly while leaving the tank be is a great way to allow things the time they need, well done on taking that decision zombie
 
Thanks guys - right now these frikin' lights are about to find a window...I have no telling if I wired like an idiot or the globes are poked or the ballast is poked:(

I so dislike troublesome issues like this...it is something so easy yet gives the most trouble for me, I get angry when I run into issues like this and I have to leave it for 30min or so and have a smoke and a cup of coffe and then give it another look to find the fault...
