The most underrated tang....

Every year we get thousands of these beauties in our rockpools, yet we overlook them in favour of practically other surgeon. Why? They graze algae, they have amazing personalities and they are a beautiful contrast to the often garish fish in our tanks.

Eish Mudshark - this is a BEAUTIFUL specimen!

I HAD 4, which Shaun helped in catching. (When I returned from KZN) - BUT, unfortunately, I made a small accident, and they got out of the bucket where I had them in (all 4 - and they died - together with some other).

I STILL WANT A SCHOOL OF THEM, in my tank! Definitely!

You can introduce more than one, but they MUST be introduced at the same time, and be the same size.
 
The convicts are lovely little tangs, but from experience don't do so well in tanks, many seem to have internal worms and suffer unless they are treated properly and if kept in shoals they often pick on the weakest until one by one they die, leaving only one.

would this be more to do with there not being enough food in the system? i had three, i added two in first and the third a couple of minutes later and the smaller of the initial two hammered the third non stop. I gave loads of nori and they eat non stop so there was enough as there was 2 feeding stations, guess these things happen. But it sucked to see the smaller of the original two picking on the third which was bigger than him:(
 
That sure is a little beauty! I`ve tried them a few times with no success , mind you i do have 10 tangs already and therefore no or very little grazing areas which i think they need.

Thanks for the heads up scuba. I've never tried more than one so was just quoting what I'd read. I'll go with your experience here.

Mine grew to the size that it is now in the quarantine tank, which has no algae to graze on. It eats mainly flake food, some peas and marine mix. Also a little nori, but not a great fan.

To be honest, i don't know why they bully others to death, but i have witnessed it going on in 3 tanks in the UK and have heard it happening to others as well.:(
 
I got one, his been with me since last year November, his also doubled in size. They look amazing when they get bigger (Color Contrasts). My friend has 3, but they just hammer each other, not to death yet anyways. Must be a territorial thing since his tank is 500L (Display)

wow they look cool in a tank,when you snorkeling/diving the yellow and details are not so clearly visible,must be our bluer tank lights highlight the colours :)

It was the normal drab black and white when I caught it, but as soon as it started eating flake, the yellow brightened up and the black stripes got wider and darker. Maybe it's just it's young adult colours...... God knows I used to look better than I do now.
 
hehe yeah im sure you used to! but a few times while snorkelling a school of convict tangs and even sgnt majors ive noticed that some individuals are yellowish while others are not,maybe social standing dictates colouring....
 
wow man i have never seen 1 in that color, in this colour it looks awesome would love 1 for my tank.
 
I agree with Mudshark i had 2 in my nano tank and they were awesome lil buggers never stop eating algae!!!!!!
Digged the colours reminded me of my school days
