Had a big problem with aiptasia . So what i feared the most of happening happened they stung my shy shark to death. His name was Elmo realy a sad day for me. So i dicede at 1st to sell the tank. But i diceded against it. So i caught all my fish all the corrals and took them back to the petshop for keeping. Took out the water. Through the life rock away cleaned the sand. Know i am waiting for life rock from Mozambique. But first i want the tank to dry out complety so that all of the aiptasias can die completely. So i would like to get some advice on doing this the best possible way??? i am sick of spending thousands of rands on my tank and all i do is flushing it away at the end of the week?
My tank is a 5 feet Jebo tank +- 600 litres. Filter is a deep sand filter ( smaller tank in the stand with the skimmer wool ect.) Chiller unit and then i got the T5 lights.
How long can my tank stand dry until everithing aiptasia is dead and how long must it run before i ad my fish. And were can i learn more about marine tanks? So any advice on this please let me know

Thank you

Now why would anyone spend thousands of rands and then ask these questions.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune Kal-El, i suppose it can be frustrating.
You're in the right place to learn about Marine tanks, im still to new to offer any decent advice, but rest assured you'll get it here.

joes juice will get rid of all the pests!!

you don't have to start over kal'el, and you come to the right place for help

How did you manage to get rock over the boarder, do you have a permit for it?

Welcome to MASA Kal. Did you collect the LR yourself from Mozambique or did you buy from a LFS there? As far as I know, collecting of LR in Mozambique is illegal.

.... shy shark........My tank is a 5 feet Jebo tank +- 600 litres.

hmmmm 600 litre and a sharkie??? IMO is way small.

Give us some more info - depending on your setup you could have just added a copperband butterfly fish - the LOVE aiptasia - also - are you sure the aiptasia killed the fish? how long have you had it for?

Also - my feeling is that you should start a trhead about your new system - take some pics(we all love pics) and tell us about everything you plan on doing before you do it - the guys on this forum has mega amouts of experience and you easily avoid costly mistakes that way

Good luck bud!
:peroni:

Yes the guy who brings the life rock does have hes permits!
I already cleaned out the tank whashed the sand. I want the tank to stand dry for 2 or 3 days before i start over. I had the tank for 3 years i went over seas and when i got back algae aiptasia were every where. i am just waiting for the the life rock it hopefully be here this weekend. Then i wil start on sunday. Starting with fresh water clean san and new life rock!

Sorry to hear you broke up your setup. Please share more with us of what you have and please post pics. Maybe you can change/modify something now already before starting up - if need be.

A very WARM WELCOME to MASA Kal-El...... I am really glad that you joined MASA. You will find that almost EVERYONE on this site is EXTREMELY passionate about keeping marines and reefs.
We are also nature conservationists who only want the ABSOLUTE BEST for any life stock that is in our care.

Therefor, I don't want you to take this the wrong way. Please.

I have had many discussions and debates about keeping sharks, with a HUGE number of people. Sharks are VERY close to my heart. I love them to bits - I love them enough to ENSURE that I will NEVER take one out of the wild, to place in a tank.
As nearly ALL sharks are fish that requires HUGE HUGE amounts of space to swim.

I agree that with a shy-shark, it does not require so much space as other species of shark. BUT, the ABSOLUTE smallest tank that you can keep even this type of species in, is a 12000 litre tank... Nothing smaller.

The amount of waste they produce is just FAR to much - and you require HUGE types of filtration to remove the POC's and DOC's produced by sharks...

My opinion is that your shark have NOT been killed by the aptaisia.

Even in my 2 metre tank, with +-870 litres of water, with hundreds of aptaisia, have I EVER lost a fish (not even the smallest) to aptiasia.... They are just far too small to deliver a big enough sting to kill a fish....
They do indeed irritate the HECK out of corals though!

My opinion is that either bad water conditions, or a lack of feeding, perhaps a lack of feeding the CORRECT foods for this fish, alternatively - an external influence, ie. water temp far too warm - or too little dissolved oxygen in the water, was the cause of this poor fish's death.

Now - unfortunately - it had to cost the death of a fish, before you came to us for advice.
We are not here to scare you, or to judge you - BUT, we are here to try and ensure that as many people as possible become and STAY responsible, respectful reefkeepers, which are nature conservationists at heart.

So - I am very glad that you have decided to "Start over", and really hope that you are open to suggestions, that you can learn the correct way of being a marine reefkeeper....

This is by no means meant to be belitteling to you.

It is just that we have seen similar mistakes made by SO MANY new reef-/marines-keepers in the past. And so MANY poor fish have died because of this....

And this is what we want to prevent!

Good luck - and may you be a VERY successful reefkeeper!

Very well said Jacques, I agree 100% with you on this ;)

Thanx!!! My Shark better known as Elmo was about 5 months old and he was happy in the tank. I am open to any advice the thing is 1 guy says Blue pils and the other one says red pils who do i trust and take its advice! The petshop gets the sharks in so if i buy them or a other guy???? Do take care of my fish. I just dont get the ful support of my petshop so and i am stil a begiiner in this. But we all started somewere? Is there some kind of book that i can read with some advice? My temp was ok coz i do have a chiller unit. Know i am going to explain my filter box and i want some advice on this!
The water flows in thruw 3 layers of white wool then threw Black sponge into a comparment. in this comparment a skimmer. then it flows over the top into a new compartment threw white wool again threw charcoal thre crushed coral under out in to new compartment then pumped back in?
What do you think of colerpa in the tank grown on the life rocks? Is colerpa nesecary???

This is HIGHLY UNLIKELY - the shark was not suitable for the tank you tried to keep it in, THAT'S why it died.

My Shark better known as Elmo was about 5 months old and he was happy in the tank

As happy as you would have been if you were locked up in a 1m x 1m x 1m cubicle for this same time - NOT LUCKY AT ALL :nono:

I am open to any advice the thing is 1 guy says Blue pils and the other one says red pils who do i trust and take its advice!

Apart from the pet shop who sold it to you, I will be highly surprised if anyone else recommended that you keep a shark in your tank. All you need to do is use the internet (Google) and you will find 100's (perhaps 1000's) of hits where scientists and experienced hobbyists all advise against this, so you could easily have found the information is you just did a little bit of research.

May I suggest that you in future believe the consensus of posts here on MASA.

The petshop gets the sharks in so if i buy them or a other guy????

They will only bring in such animals IF there are people like you who buy them. This is NO EXCUSE for buying something unsuitable - rather let the animal die in the shop, then the shop owner will make a loss, and that will tell him not to bring in another one.

We are all about being ETHICAL aquarists - name the pet shop, and I will personally report him to the SPCA - you see, it is a CRIMINAL OFFENSE to be cruel to ANY animal

Ok you made youre point. I am not here to report ppl to the SPCA i am here to get help. I asked about the filter and stil no answer or comment???
