Hi guys. I have a 4 foot tank that measures 1200mm x 450mm x 450mm. Currently have it stocked with Live Bearers, Zebra Danios, Bronze & Albino Corydoras, a few Apple Snails & a few Algae Eaters.

Thinking of moving over to Malawi Cichlids.

1. How many can I keep comfortably in my tank & what type should I start with?

2. What Canister Filter should I get as I currently use a SunSun HJ1152 power filter?
 
I have a cascade 1200 cannister for sale if you interisted. I use to run it on my 4ft tank before i shut the tank down
 
Id say get yourself a 1600 canister and internal sponge filters , you should be able to get quite a few fish in there but in my opinion they are messy fish and if you want them nice and plump then even more so because they poop a lot and food gets wasted so good filtration is important .
 
Imo a 4ft tank is a bit small for malawis. I kept them for a while but as they got bigger they became aggressive and terretorial. Eventually they started to kill each other.

I've been looking at the Dophin C1600....

Just need to know what number I can keep comfortably. What are the smaller types of Malawis?
 
I had easily over 20 fish but i had lots of rocks for hiding places . One thing i would say , is too avoid mabuna cichlids from the begging and go for peacock cichlids , mabuna are extra territorial and more aggressive and will prob end up killing the one fish you really want to survive

Good brand , works really well and you can get it at a good price , the one which i had bought , i got on sale for R1500 so just keep your eyes open , there is also nothing wrong with second hand either . Just be sure too buy clean sponges and disinfect it just too make sure nothing is being transferred from the previous owners tank . I must ask .... where about are you from ?

I am from Durban, South Africa.
 
Why are you not doing a marine tank my friend , you in Durban , you have access to some of the best marine animals and water for water changes .

To be honest, the whole Marine Tank craze has not caught onto me..........Yet.
 
Well i wish you all the best with your tank , cichlids are full of character and they are great to sit and watch .

Soon brother. I'm actually looking into getting a 3meter tank custom made, which I will have as a Malawi Cichlid Display tank...that's ofcourse, once I've done all my research.
 
I used to keep and breed multiple species of wild caught cichlids before I kept marines from mbuna, aulonocara Zaire blues etc...

You can definitely do a stunning mbuna tank if you pick the right species, stocking levels and have enough space. In fact it will have more colors than an aulonocara tank as the females still have some colour.. Just buy the right species and get good quality stock.. Not these hybrid fish sold these days

I had a 2m tank with 30 first generation ps saulosi, 30 pseudotropheus long pelvic and albino pseudotropheus socolofi.. Looked like a reef tank coz they swam over the rocks eating algae
