I got this guy from someone who was shutting down and he had no idea what it was. Best pic I could get. I am thinking a sort of wrasse?

Common in KZN and Transkei, get very agro as they get bigger. Lovely colours when they big though.

On a side note, you probably should not put fish in your tank if you do not know what they are.
I fully agree and don't usually but this was the only little guy left in his nano tank and if I didn't take him I don't think he would be around anymore. I don't know the guy either or where he got it from unfortunately but I would rather try and save and re-home if and when the need arises than let it die due to ignorance.

Thanks for the ID. I was leaning towards the Ladder Wrasse as well.

Yes, ladder wrasse like this one a friend caught and released last week:

Certainly, but the original guy now caused an issue. Not many people would be interested in taking that wrasse, and since it was already in a home aquarium, you should actually not put it back into the ocean, or so I have been advised, as you risk bringing unknown issues into the ecosystem. That is why I made the comment, and I really hope people will learn from it, even if it is just a few.

I myself catch fish along the coast with valid licenses to put into my tank, but I know exactly what I am catching and what their behavior is.

Have the exact same ladder wrasse.Very entertaining to watch him.I have had no issues with him. Also he does not eat my coral.
