What brand of salt are you using and what are your parameters?
Are you dosing ?

I use seachem reef salt and my parameters on my Kh and Mg stay low, where as my Ca is high.

parameters after water change
Salinity - 1.027 SG according to instructions
Temp - 25.4
PH - 8.0
NH3 - <0.25 ppm
NO2 - 0 ppm
NO3 - 0 ppm
KH - 7 dkH
CA - 540 ppm
MG - 1200 ppm

Dosing Bicarb for kh.

Your calcium is quite high indeed... Seachem list the parameters for their reef salt as being 440ca 1300mg and KH between 9 and 11dkH

Calcium and Alkalinity are linked, so check out this article and see what it says - I note with great interest that they say standard test kits will give false KH readings for Seachem salt due to bicarbonate and carbonate but not borate content.

Chemistry And The Aquarium: Solving Calcium And Alkalinity Problems

I like the new Blue Treasure SPS salt - gives me parameters of 440ca, 1400mg and KH around 9 straight out of the bag. Cheaper than Seachem too #JustSaying

You can check it out here:

Hope that helps :)

I found the exact opposite...

I also use seachem reef salt...

Alk usually between 8 to 9dkh

Ca between 380 and 400ppm

Mg is really low on my batch between 1000 and 1100ppm

I dry mix it every time before I mix a batch

There is nothing wrong with keeping your alk around 7dkh...

My parameters are currently (tested yesterday)

Alk 7.3
Ca 410
Mg 1300

Dosing bicarb for alk
calcium chloride for ca
Epson salt for mg

Yes ca is very high and that is out of the bucket, But I do think it will come down when I add corals to the tank.
My main concern is the kh.
Im going to try the bt salt, i dont want to battle with parameters early on.

thx for the link ;)

This is interesting
Are you following direction on bucket, 675g per 20 liter?
If I follow the directions my salinity is at 1.027 at 25 °C
My parameters is with no corals in the tank only rock, sand and fish.

@Henkie my kh is around 7 dkh for the first week and then is goes down to 6.1 or 6.4
Does the epson salt mess around with your salinity levels?

I mix to either 1.025 or 1.026

Had a chat with seachem and they say it happens once in a while (low mg) but otherwise the salt is great.

Well obviously you have something consuming the alk, so keep an eye on it and dose according...

I mix a stock solution of mg and then just dose as I see it's necessary... Usually once a month I need to bump it up

1.027 is quite high. Would be interested to see the results at 1.025

Yah it is high - 1.025-1.026 would be more in keeping with norms for coral care

We are using Seacham full reef salt but found if we make it up and then keep it circulating for two weeks before using we never have any problems, was advised to do that by a marine biologist

Thats a long time Rick, I usually circulate the water two to three days before using.
thats probably ok its just i do two different water changes in a month so i make up 250L for one monthly water change use it two weeks later then make up the second batch for the other water change on a different system it works for me so just my opinion

That's actually a nice system if it suits your setup and needs. I'm an instant gratification kind of personality with little space to work with, so I mix as needed and use within an hour or two. Blue treasure is all good with that :)
