Hi all

This morning I decided to test our sea water here in Swakopmund Namibia.

Did the test with Salifert test kits
Water Temp. and SG with a floating glass Thermometer.
Our sea water normaly has a temp. from 14 and up to 18
Floated the bottle in the aquarium for 30min with 250ml water in it.

Temp 25
SG 1.026

pH 7.4
KH 7
Alk 2.51

NH4 0
NO2 0.01
NO3 2.5
PO4 0.25

CA 410
Mg 1230
I2 0.01 (combined iodate and iodine test)

So what info do you have to make this water usable for reef tank

Thanks

Ok going to add

Brightwell PO remover Liquid is awesome and it will remove the phosphate
Then buffer with PH and KH to get that right. Allmixed up in a drum for a week before water change.

What do you guys think?

Got this from the web

I would use that water no problem, just lower the phosphate levels.

@Alan I am using NSW, tested that water near by the mole in swakop, now I'm collecting further out and test is spot on, water just cold, lol

Your ph reading is probably not accurate fresh sea water should be above 7.9 usually but also depends rock pools may have lower ph , also ph tests need to be done very quickly on the water if you let water sit for 30 minutes you will get a different ph reading.

You are likely going to have to buffer and use phosphate remover( by itself removes kh from water as well)

I hope it works for you but often treating and buffing the water - the costs add up to almost the same on r/0 saltmixes (also no possibility of adding live disease this way which there is with Nsw)

Also bear in mind Durban/Kzn water is subtropical and corals naturally grow there, so it is closer to the water that is required for tropical setups- cold Atlantic water is nutrient rich and grows algae really well! eg. kelp forests as opposed to corals!
