Urban Marines prides itself as a company who is environmentally conscious and it is on this note that we have proudly become exclusive South African distributors for an exciting new concept; a liverock substitute call Real Reef Rock from the USA.

This product has rapidly become the product of choice over liverock in the USA and Europe is not far behind

It is a man made rock made from Calcium Carbonate each with its own unique shape, that is pink/purple in colour.
It is then matured in holding aquariums. This is what we now supply exclusively as rock for marine aquariums.

We ensure we only import coral and fish that are taken from sustainable breeding stocks but removal of liverock is always going to destroy habitat for these creatures that took thousands of years to form. Now with Real Reef Rock this is no longer an issue

  • No unwanted hitchhikers
  • No curing
  • Permanent Pink/Purple coralinne colour
  • All the advantages of liverock without the disadvantages
  • Zero marine environmental impact
  • Replicas of Liverock no longer exported like Tonga Branch and Fiji shelf liverock

Our first shipment is arriving soon, place your orders now @ R195/kg!

Damn that looks good. Much more sustainable. Not sure why more South Africans dont use this type of bio rock or even dry/dead rock.

Is it purple all the way through?

Will it give the same volume per kg as LR?

Shan, good point!
I guess people are reluctant to use dead rock due to the lack of colour.
GDP, this is a liverock replica, as with liverock coralline algae will only grow on the outside of the rock, so with Real Reef the rock is also coloured on the outside but as with liverock, the rock houses beneficial bacteria on the outside and inside.
In terms of porosity, the rock is based on similar porosity as the best quality Fiji liverock. What this means is max volume for each kg you buy.More volume than other liverock out there...

GDP feel free to pm me your details should you wish to order.
We have already had to triple our first order based on the interest recieved so far.

Nice and the fact that it is helping our reefs I will definetly support this in the near future.Well done guys for bringing this stuff in!:)

Agreed! A product like this is way overdue and im sure will replace liverock 100% in the near future...
I will post more pics soon...the Tonga Branch and Fiji shelf rock shapes are insane... ;)

Hey flappy,

Couple of questions, do you guys ship to joburg? Or have a supplier here? Any cost per kg yet or you waiting to see how big the order will be?

Thanks

Thanks @flappy, my tank is still in its planning stages so I can't tell you now, I will have to wait for the next order I think as my tank won't be read for a couple months still

Hi Flappy

I don't want to sound rude but isn't that price higher then live rock
The reason for asking is that most ppl will continue buying live rock as it is cheaper and that is my only concern

Sorry if I sound negative but it is just that I love the thought of supplement live rock but if there is something cheaper most ppl will go and buy that.

Ahmed, we expecting the first batch in two weeks so you are most welcome to check it out then.
Maximus no problem, give us a shout when you ready.
Pieter, you raise a good point. My answer is Real Reef is not comparable to the liverock we commonly see for sale in South Africa.Real Reef is more porous, lighter and has far better colour.Based on this it is more comparable to the likes of Fiji Premium Rock which sells for more than our rock.Fiji premium is seldom available due to export limitations.

Hi Flappy

so would i be correct in saying, from what i have read, i could effectivly replace live rick in my tank with out it going through a cycle? how is the rock shipped? surely this means it is shipped in water to prevent die off? i am realy interested in replacing rock in my tank as this looks so much more appealing and the shapes look amazing awaiting your response regarding the cycling issue

Real Reef Rock only grows the basic building blocks to start a modern marine aquarium. Nitrifying Bacteria, Micro algaes and some Coraline algaes. Real Reef rock does not need to be cured, but requires to be cycled upon arrival for a minimum of 3 weeks. This will ensure that the biology of the rock is rehabilitated after shipping, to be sold as a Bio-Active live cultured rock. Real Reef Rock will cycle a tank, but is no replacement for established rock in an existing aquarium of some age. It will cycle a brand new aquarium, but will not handle an existing bio load of an established tank immediately. Changing your Aquarium over to Real Reef will be like starting a new tank again. It just works faster with better long term results than wild rock. Most of all it doesn't come with hitchhiking nuisance pests. Most find the extra effort was worth it long term. I hope this has helped? If you want to change over to Real Reef Rock in an existing aquarium a gradual change is always advised.
