What is "Visitor's messages" (and how is it different from My Inbox)

Only realised today that I have an area under "My Profile" with visitor's messages (and that I have messages in it).

What is this for and how is it different from My Inbox in Private Messages?

Also, how do I know if I have a visitor's message?

like with facebook,somebody can either invox you,or write on your wall....here the visitor message is on your "profile wall" where anybody and everybody can see
