Hi guys and girls

I wanted to find out if all pumps or return pumps are able to accept a venturi valve or if only certain pumps such as Reef Octopus can accept venturi valves? Is it possible to modify it so that it will take the venturi valve?

The reason I ask is that I wanted to know if my Reeftek skimmer goes, do I have to replace it with another Reef Octopus pump or can I use another pump with a venturi valve?

you can modify any pump to take a venturi, but some pumps will work better with a predesigned and tested system than others...

remember the impellor also now plays a huge part in obtaining fine bubbles so its best to find a pump that you can get a standard balanced impellor for... you can also modify the impellor but then the balancing may become an issue and possible wear on the inner chamber could arise as a result..

at the risk of sounding old (im only 35) we use to make venturi systems in the days before pump driven skimmers to skim water...

a mate of mine Dennis schultz did this to skim water in his marine pond....

Thanks for that. So alot of planning will go into making it fit correctly and not cause damage to the pump. What other pumps have venturi valves? I know the Reef Octopus does but any other brands?

So its possible to take a normal pump and change the impellor and add a venturi valve to get it to work as a skimmer pump?

As Leslie explained, it is not about the pump or the more flow the skimmer pump produces. It is about the amount of AIR that the pump produces for the water throughput within the skimmer. One can be successful with DIY and mesh wheel mods but the crux always boils down to evidence. Either at the wall plug or money paid for protine extraction.

Most pumps,Stators are manufactured by specialist stator manufacturers and impellers by impeller specialists. Brands combine these and market under their brand names. This is why so many different brand names products spares are interchangeable.

Within the brand you choose you should not have issues obtaining any spares in the future for the next couple of years.
