There seems to be a lot of filter pads available in South Africa, but what makes Poly-Filter different. Most filter pads in industry are simply non woven Polyester fiber (filter floss) which is used for detritus and particulate collection. These pads have no other properties other than simple barrier restriction of particulate matter i.e. window screen or cheese cloth type particle collection. This type of filter pads always contains a fire proofing coating which will leach in aquarium water. The binders are not approved for aquarium water, food fish or potable water. In fact they are the same fire proofing agents used on Polyester fiber padding used for seats and furniture.

Poly-Filter on the other hand starts with a medical grade and very specialized polyester fiber with a US FDA approved Acrylic binder. In this state it is extremely flammable so it cannot be used for consumer applications. Poly-Filter is then manufactured in rolls which are slit into mini-rolls for the coating/encapsulation process.

After coating the fiber, it is fully extracted and trace elements saturated with Bioassay grade marine saltwater then rinsed out in sterile, distilled water and then heat dried and dehumidified. Afterward all filters are inspected then packaged.

Poly-Filter’s patented Terpolymer coating, literately creates a dialysis type product upon their coated fibers. Poly-Filter claims have been validated by a US Medical School (UMDNJ) Department of Toxicology using US EPA and US FDA Standards and Methods of Analysis. Obviously there is no comparison between the quality of simple Polyester fiber pads and Poly-Filter. In addition, Poly-Filter’s Terpolymer coating renders Poly-Filter nonflammable, where it cross links and shrinks down when exposed to high temperatures.

I have also seen carbon filter pads which is basically an air filter product. If you test it for phosphates and silicates it should be loaded. These products meet no standards for water filtration because they were designed for air filtration only. In aquaria the only purpose it can perform is a slight increase in water clarity. This occurs because the particles attached to the charged surface. Charged clay products do the same but they cannot remove the solutes that Poly-Filter does.

Poly-Filter sorbs ammonia , amines, amino acids, proteins, lipoproteins, phenols, tannins / humic acid, fish and human medications, volatile organic chemicals, other chemicals, charged polymers, formaldehyde, heavy metals , pesticides and other water soluble solutes.
