Since my little tank wil only be consuming less than 10 liters of ro water per month ive decided to go with the option of bottled water,is there any ro water someone would recomend to buy since petshops selling ro water is too far away, there is a bottled ro water on the market I know of but it is ozone enriched, what effect whil this have on the tank and is it ussable?

my suggestion get to the closest oasis to you, they keep their water lower than 20 tds, usually around 1-5. thats were i get my water. there is one in strand as far as i know.

Most shopping centres have an RO station. My spar has just put in a new Oasis unit. Rather find a new one. But test the TDS - I am not 100% happy using these because dont they remineralise the water? Or is the TDS still low enough?

normal Ro machines remineralise the water, oasis doesnt however do that....... thats why i use oasis for my water

So is it better to use water that is not remineralised, its the oasis bottled water im talking about,on the label they say it is ozone enriched,is this stil okay to use then

yeah it is still ok to use

As far as i know ozone ( o3 ) is verry unstable and quickly converts bak to oxygen (o2) so once opened if you want to be sure drop a airstone on the drum for 10min and it should be fine.

OKay so the water i can get from my local store has the following chemical composition so please tell me if this is okay to use for top ups and water changes, wil try to get ro water from a lfs aswell from time to time when I go to cape town

all is in mg/l

Calcium 0.11-0.33
magnesium 0.09-0.54
Sodium 1.15-6.9
Potassium 0.29-1.74
Chloride 1.99-6.90
Sulphate 0.31-1.86
Alkalininty 3.01-3.06
Nitrate 0.6-3.6
flouride 0.00-0.06
iron 0.00-0.69
aluminium 0.00-0.06
TDS 6-29
ph 6.4-7.3

PLease tell me if any of these parameters are way over board,I know the tds and nitrate is a bit high but I have started up mu tank with this water and cycling for 2 weeks now and all seems fine, already getting tube worms growing on my pumps

Hi Franske,

I'm no expert with this by any stretch of the immagination but I know that ammonia, nirtite and nitate are very bad for the inhabitants of the tank. The water "specs" that you gave looks rather high nitrate 's - but thats just my 2 cents worth

please remember that as oasis is a national brand that label is nationalised and you will find that in most cases it is on the lower side of that scale

Only problem is that tap water in my area is about 65 to 70.

Their range of upto 29, is water purified only about 50%.

Other problem is that you do not know when they replaced their filter units. So yes, maybe this time when you fetched water, the TDS is 6. But next month? So I would suggest to test that TDS every time.

Lastly, what makes that TDS of 6-29? Is it good or bad particles? 29 as in copper, NO.

Ozone, O3 is extremely unstable. The most corrosive agent out there. I doubt if it will even be in your bottle as O3, within 10 minutes of bottling the water. Never mind even opening it. Also O3 is extremely dangerous to your health. But you can drink that water directly after opening. Just to proof my point.
O3 got a faint smell to it, as if something is rotting, orange whatever. Actually it does not smell at all. That what you smell is actually the slime layers and skin in your nose being broken down and decomposed by the O3. The moisture in your nose reacting to the O3. YIKES. Also your eyes will feel scratchy, same thing, the O3 reacting with the tears in your eyeballs, breaking it down.

So what will happen with your water at TDS of 29, is that it will provide a lot of minerals the O3 can combine to easily. Breaking complex down into simpler chemical compounds. And these would be easier for your skimmer to remove it. So I would reckon if you want to use this O3 purified water, add it to your skimmer compartment.

I got no documents or links to back the last statement up, about skimmer compartment. Just what I know about running Ozone on your tank, and normally the skimmer is used as Ozone chamber.

can you please post the source of this information.

ozone does have a very distinct smell.

Ozone and the Reef Aquarium, Part 2: Equipment and Safety by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com
So, if you can smell ozone, it may or may not be at dangerous levels. It is quite possible, however, to use ozone in a manner where it cannot be smelled, assuming that the equipment and procedures are adequate, including passing the post-reactor air over a suitable amount of GAC (discussed in the next section). My advice, then, is that if you choose to use ozone, you do so in a way in which you cannot detect its odor. Is that a guarantee that you will suffer no harmful effects? No. Some people have a much poorer sense of smell than others. And future studies may show harmful effects even at levels below the threshold of detection by the human nose. But if I were using ozone, and I could smell it, I would take affirmative action to reduce the escape of the ozone gas.

Aquaculture
Ozone can be used in aquaculture to facilitate organic breakdown. It is added to recirculating systems to reduce nitrite levels[65] through conversion into nitrate. If nitrite levels in the water are high, nitrites will also accumulate in the blood and tissues of fish, where it interferes with oxygen transport (it causes oxidation of the heme-group of haemoglobin from ferrous(Fe2+) to ferric (Fe3+), making haemoglobin unable to bind O2[66]). Despite these apparent positive effects, ozone use in recirculation systems has been linked to reducing the level of bioavailable iodine in salt water systems, resulting in iodine deficiency symptoms such as goitre and decreased growth in Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) larvae.[67]

How does ozone smell and when can you smell it? - Yahoo! Answers
It smells like sparks. Old time amusement parks had electric bumper cars, and ozone always hung heavy in the air around them
It smells like burning electrical equipment or wires.

We think a misunderstanding about ozone is also due to the fact that people equate even tiny amounts of ozone (which is a short-lived, unstable gas that reacts with many pollutants and odors to produce harmless water vapor and carbon dioxide) with chlorine, propane, or dioxin (which are bad in any amount). Properly adjusted and applied (that is, to environments where there are certain pollutants or odors present), the ozone is destroyed, unlike other gases, and there will be little (if any) ozone present even with the ozone generator running. However, it should be noted that ozone does not react favorably with some chemical vapors, such as denatured alcohol, and the result is harmful unwanted aldehydes.

I know ozone hasa smell, i checked its MSDS to be sure...but in your previous post you said it didnt have a smell and the smell it generated was actually that of rotting tissue?

btw guys, all oasis are required to take daily readings of tds and they all have tds meters you can ask them to take a tds reading in front of you if you wish

sorry 459b

yip, smell is actually faint. But if you put the airline tube from ozone unit under your nose, most of what you are actually smelling is your nose internals reacting to the ozone. Please do not do it, as it is dangerous.

I did it out of stupidity. Did not know if unit was working when I got it, actually sucked on the airline tube. Was not nice. Had to down a beer to get rid of the taste in my mouth. Later I read up that it was actually the saliva in my mouth reacting to the O3.
