wow Brenda the numbers just keep climbing hey.. congrats
It's a pity he's not the same species. but hey if he wants to help to get the numbers up by all means go for it big daddy.Thank you!
He's been watching too much news coverage on the BP oil spill. I think he’s got it in his mind that he is going to restock the ocean!
I don't think Bp would let the little man take the fall
Hows daddy & babies?
can't you help it fart or burp?
We're at the start of day five (first critical point). I've culled one. I still have quite a few that are not eating as well as they should be.
I did try a larger kreisel tank in the beginning, but had some issues with it. For some reason about 90% were not eating. I adjusted the flow many times, food density was high, and I still couldn't make them happy. So they are all crammed into the smaller one. I'll try the larger one when they get a little stronger/bigger.
Brenda, I am still a noob at all the breeding things, but dont you think a Bigger setup = more energy spent etc ?
It can be, but doesn’t have to be. When I say I went to a bigger kreisel, it was from 2 ½ gallons to 4 gallons (9.5 liters to 15 liters). Not a huge difference, but it was enough to give them a little more room with this large batch. Keeping large numbers in smaller space can cause bacterial issues.
I do know others who keep them in 90 gallon (340 liters) round tubs and have a very high success rate. They start out with about 1/3 of the tub filled with water (water going in a circular motion) and increase the level as the horses grow. However, their filtration is a lot better than mine. The better filtration results in less maintenance.
I do believe my 4 gallon kreisel will work. It just needs some adjustments, and some experimenting. Unfortunately, these guys were getting weaker and I didn’t feel I had any more time to play around with flow. I spent an entire day trying to tweak it, and finally at 1:00 in the morning I decided to tear down the tank. Once I got them in the new tank, they ate. By 4:00 in the morning most had full bellies. I was exhausted!
Hey Brenda I went searching for the sweetie jar at several plastic stores & zip only glass ones but there's one more store to check out otherwise I'll have to find another way or just DIY something. Holding thumbs & hope the little ones start eating.
Thanks for the explanation / input Brenda...I am absorbing ideas like "spunge bob square pants"..thus al the questions BUT having said that my gut feeling is that maybe in this instance bigger is not better...
