Hi Guys

I am busy setting up new system: 1.8m x 1m x 0.8m high. I will be moving my existing livestock into this tank over time.

Low iron front and side panels.
Lighting - ATI Powermodule 8 x 54w T5's
Flow - 2 x AM 15000l pumps, plus my existing tunzi nano's (will see how this goes)
Skimmer by Zayn (Phuturelab) - will see how this works out.
Carbon reactor
Phosphate Reactor
Nitrate reducer/reactor
DSB in sump
11000l return pump - return chamber on left will be increased as just a bit too small for pump to fit into it. Also thinking of increasing height of baffles fro 17.5cm to 25cm.

Any advice and thoughts will be appreciated.

Its going to be monster with those dimensions.
Tank looks really well constructed, especially its robust top bracing
Going to be a bugger to work in the centre back section of the tank though.

Tell us a bit more about the sump layout.

lovley size suggested, id die for something like that .. just a word of caution , if that is where it is going to stand make sure the floor can handle the weight.. im sure you have considered this already,,

Looking good. I would make the baffles higher. I had a sump with low baffles like that and had big problems with micro bubbles because the water was flowing rather fast through the sump. Just make sure its big enough to accomodate extra water when the power goes out.
 
Nice tank. Are you going to have enough space to work in the sump?
 
Nice tank. I think the return pump is way too strong, 11000lph? You will have one hell of a sand storm in the sump and the skimmer will be less effective as the water just blows past it.
Baffles is also too low in the sump. If the DSB is 15cm deep, then the baffles needs to be about 25cm at least, which will give you a 10cm water height above the sand. You can even go a bit more.
 
very nice setup,but defnitly look into the space working under that tank.
Phuturelab skimmers work well,saw many of them in action.
Will you be using the phuturelab range for ur reactors aswell?

I have that problem now where the space above the sump is a nightmare to work with.
 
It is solid wood flooring directly on the concrete floor. 50mm stand on top of styrafoam base. Didn't consider it though as I did not think it would be a problem.

Do you think it will be ok?

Reason why I asked u this is because im considering getting those reactors,thought maybe u got some experience with them.
Looking specifically at the nitrate reducer from powerlab

That sump looks just like a zayn special,lotsa tanks he built has those shallow sumps-wonder whats the significance of those low baffles?

Why your sump so small?
Ok, see you want skimmer and kalkstirrer to be outside, why not put them both on same side of the sump. Stand is 800mm to the back.

BUT
Are you sure your skimmer and other reactors will fit into the sump area. Your sump glass also looks already as it it at the maximum height. If it is full of water, how will you get your return pump in and out. Sounds like a big pump at 11000L/h.
Maybe remove parts of the plank the sump is standing on, so that the skimmer can stand directly on the floor. That will save you another couple of centimetres, at least 7, so that your skimmer cup could be removed.

Big tanks as in tall viewing tanks are nice. But a bitch to work on. Mine is 750mm high. When I redone my rock work the last time, I first drained 200L+. Then I could do the placing of the rocks without sticking my chest and head into the water. Next time I will use my snorkel and goggles.

Wrt to the size of the sump, I want to leave space for skimmer and k/stirrer on one side and then for a calcium reactor on the other side. the sump is 110 cm by 60 cm.

I have checked and the skimmer cup can just about be removed as is. But removing some of the wooden base is a great idea. Will look into it. The sump water level will only be half way up the front panel especially if I leave baffles as is and the return pump can easily be removed, but will check to make sure.

I am also worried about the height and working in the tank. Will see how this works out as I really like a tall tank. In any event it is too late now.

Hi

I amthinking of putting some kind of rubber mat on base of tank on which to rest the live rock on.

Any ideas for a safe material to use and whether anyone thinks this will be a problem?

Also, I have Jager heaters that I was thinking of using, but are there any alternatives that have better thermostats and accuracy, etc.

I have decided to simply put a sheet of perspex below the liverock with a low sandbed (2 to 3 cm) around the rockwork. Will silicone the perspex to the base.

I used about 40cm pieces of 50mm PVC pipe sideways. all my LR is then resting then on this.

  • It spread the weight of the LR a bit more over a bigger piece of glass.
  • It makes my LR stack 50mm higher...
  • Gobies and other digging animals can not cause a rock fall.
