been catching a few kob and loads of spotty's biggest just over 3 kg'swill post pics as soon as i find my cable.otherwise just 2 shad and a couple of sand sharks. what can i say i fish light tackle for 2 hours every night for the last 2 months to destress from work.

anyone know anything about reels? looking to buy a new one... the dude at the shop wants to sell me a silstar coffee-grinder. what you guys think?
 
Shot bought the oukuma san juan level wind for my 66 rod but need something that my wife can fish with when she comes with.
 
Personal preference: Level Winders- 10ft rod I use Saltiga 30 but a very good replacement a a bit cheaper price is Shimano Speedmaster as well as the Daiwa SL30. For my Bigger Rods I use the Saltist 50, Daiwa Grandwave SHL50 as well as a couple of Shimano Speedmasters with heavier line. I do however prefer "Light tackle" fishing, meaning you can still catch big fish but it'll only take longer to land the fish and also have a 50/50 chance......

I grew up using mostly "Coffee Grinders" and I can really say that few of our local shops in South Africa import descent reels as they import the cheaper versions for the "Majority" middle market. Silstar have good reels but only for freshwater fishing, Okuma has only recently "stepped" into the market with better reels. They first "flooded" the market with cheap, inferior reels to get the market and then brought in better reels- clever strategy (Have about 09 broken ones in a box in the garage)

Very good Multiplier/coffee grinders for saltwater fishing is definately the Saltiga range that will last you a lifetime (Like the reels you inherited from your grandfather -the Webco's, Olympus, Mitchells etc- that still works). But they come at a price, ranging from the smaller reels starting at about R2500.00 to the bigger ones for about R6500.00. Really good reels that WILL outlast you and your children . But again, excellent reels that will not let you down is the Daiwa Exceller range- all in the 700.00 bucks range. They can take the hammering, saltwater and sand. Unfortunately my favourate brand- Shimano- has too much plastic/teflon inside to last and they wear out, especially if you land a couple of bigger fish.
Other good reliable Coffee Grinders are the Daiwa Bg Range, good reels but, their drag systems are not the greatest, their spools are not designed for long distance casting, but they do last.

It is unfortunate that we do not see the "VanStaal" (No funny things and not too much crap inside the "Engine" compartment) range in South Africa as well as the descent Mitchell Coffee Grinders, as well as the real Shimano's.

Rods- for use with Level winder reels I use a Custom Built (Blue Marlin Blank) 14ft light tip (400/2) rod for most of my Surf Fishing. I had it now for 08 years and still going strong-redid the eyes and windings last year but the rod is still great. For my Shark Fishing or my Kosi Bay trips I use a heavy tip rod (09 Ounce tip)- the Poseidon 4 Magnum.
The 12 foot is a Kingfisher Stimulator 3 piece- very good action 3.5 ounce weight.

And all my favourate small rods I use with "Coffee Grinders" is the Daiwa Megaforce range- Brilliant action. I have the 5 foot, 07 foot and 09 foot and am still impressed with these rods. Mos of the time I use the 05 footer in the Bay and Estuaries.

Another Favourate light rod is a Custom Built Purglass rod- 10 foot. This is the rod I use most of the time in the surf for Pompano, Shad, Salmon etc. I use a Daiwa Bg 30 Coffee Grinder with the Rod- superb balance and a very good all rounder.I also bought my wife the same combination as she sometimes like to catch some Shad if they around- or if she goes with...LoL
 
Mekaeel, I only use 03 different types of traces-Always. On the small rods- inside the bays/Estuaries- I use a sliding ball sinker with 0.5 Monafilent line (500mm long) and a no 2 or no 1 hook. I Always use the same technique as it works for me...

Surf fishing again- Sliding sinker (Grapnel) but this time the sinker is connected to a 400mm 0.7mm line which in turn is tied to a no 04 swivel. The swivel then slides on the line. Deep sea fishing I'll use 03 way swivels. I never change as it works and it is fast to make up a trace using this method- especially if you catching Compo's
 
The mistake most peole make is that they walk into a tackle shop and buy something they have money for at that specific moment. If you fishing more than once a month I would really suggest to save money for the right rod and reel combination. You'll be amazed on what the difference between a good combination and average or less than average combination can do to your casting distance as well as landing a fish...

Also the fact that it will last you for years to come. There is in my mind only one good make of rod eyes and that is the Fuji range, anything less is inferior. I say this because I have lots (believe me if I say this) of rods and rod tips lying in the garage with their rod eyes broken. There is not a lot of rod eyes that can handle a leader line knot going thru it with incredible speed- they tend to crack/ explode/break.
A quality rod must have 03 things- again in my mind- Good Balance, Proper graphite wall thickness as well as Fuji eyes. I have rods that are not Graphite or Graphite Composite- but they can really not come close to Graphite. It is like comparing a Beetle with a Porche.
