Hey Everyone,

So some of you may have caught wind that I am planning a DIY led build.

So here's all the details. List of components I have:

  1. Bridgelux 3W Royal Blue Led Stars
  2. Bridgelux 3W 12 000K White Led Stars
  3. Bridgelux 3W 6500K White Led Stars
  4. 60 Degree Optics
  5. 80 Degree Optics
  6. Dimmable LED Drivers (12 - 20 3W LEDS Each)
  7. Heat Sink
  8. Thermal Epoxy

Alright so those are the main components. I've got all the wire and everything else.

The heat sink I managed to get hold of is 600mm x 190mm.

So here is where I need your input. How many leds should I use?
(Tank is 1000mm x 600mm x 450mm High (Water Level: 420mm)

Mainly keeping sps and clams.

I've got plenty of each led but still am unsure of how many to use and more specifically how many of each colour?

So before everyone asks for pictures here they are:

So here is how it all started on Monday morning. As I came to work this strange looking box was on my desk.

Wired up 12 led's just to check them. No optics, damn they are bright.

Here's a pic of the heat sink, this thing is serious.

So many questions still.

Do I go for a linear layout (So lets say 4 rows of 12 leds) or do I do something different?

Which lenses should I use or should I mix the lenses around (So 80 degree around the edges and 60 degree in the middle)?

Following - good luck with the build.

Thanks dude.
Too narrow for what I need.
Other heat sinks are 280mm wide - Will order another one again....

I have some solder less connectors spare if you are interested.
Saves you having to glue the LEDs onto the heat sink, works with self tapping screws....

Do you have a link for these things?

I need at least 60.

Are you doing one unit with 48 led's for the whole tank?
Are they dimmable and or digitallly controlable drivers?
how many led's per driver?
mixing led colours on each driver?
How high are you planning to mount the unit?

You tell me.

Don't know how many LEDs to use. Can wire up to 20 LEDs per driver. They are dimmable via my controller. I'll run each colour on a seperate driver so my colour mix can be adjusted. Don't know how high I will mount the unit. Guess it depends on the spread I'll get.
