Salt??

Hi All!

This may be a stupid question - but if I get salt from a salt factory [before being processed], can it be used instead of the salt bought from the pet store?

Are you talking about normal salt we use in the kitchen?

Most salts that are used for reefkeeping hace added trace elements and minerals , so i would say no

Just to give you an idea of the difference of table salt and marine salt, here are 2 analysis of the 2 salts, the first one is table salt and the other one is Instant Ocean sea salt.

Viper,

there is no way that the second column is Instant Ocean or any other salt for marine aquaria (or if it is there is a serious problem).

Calcium content of a reef aquarium salt will be around 1.2%, magnesium will be around 3.7%, sulphate will be around 7.8% etc.

Point is that a marine aquarium salt is waaaaayyyyy different to pure sodium chloride.

Do you mean the 2nd column in the first pic or the 2nd column in the 2nd pic?

only looked at the first pic, but the second pic appears to be a analysis of the salt in solution, not in a dried form.

So you can't compare the two unless you convert both to the same units.

Ok, the first pic is table salt, the 2nd pic is the synthetic salt, I purely put them up to show the difference in composition of the 2 salts, synthetic salt obviously has so much more in it than table salt. It was just an example, not a scientific study for you to rip to shreds, leave me alone now

p.s. I put some more games up in the arcade for you

When I first started marine I was told to get Lab grade salt.
Never did, but he has been using it for years.
