Will a Car HID Xenon Light Work on a reef Tank

Hi Guy would like to know if a HID Car head light will work on a tank??
 
I can only imagine the headlines in the news paper soon......

i got some xenons in my car and they work amazingly well however i think their colour is somthing like 6500K which what gives them the advantage of more visible light which travels furthur compared to halogen bulbs, you can also get higher kelvin rating bulbs however i think they are like 35W and what ive read is that they give about 30-50 lumens per watt and dont produce much ultraviolet light. metal halides provides about 60-130 lumens per watt so in conclusion, i rekn u can use xenons however they will not work as well as a metal halides. hope that helps
 
you can get them upto 12000K and from 50-150w
they also operate on 12v but setup to 6000v

The Vision Pro 10000K HID Bi Xenon replacement kit / system (Bi Xenon means low and high beam) has an approximate 2200lm output, which is more than 2 times the light output of traditional halogen lights. 10000K H.I.D. light bulbs produce a deep blue light output, approaching violet, and the blue is noticeably deeper than the 8000K.

This color temperature puts out a deep bluish violet light and is deeper colored than the 10000K. thats pretty cool but still i think for the price, metal halide is better and also produces much more light. also i cant see how you would hook up car light bulbs for a marine tank, has anyone ever even tried it?? would be interesting to see the results :)
 
i posted it for info....i wont install these unless there is a major reduction in electricity consumption. Its way too expensive and also the light itself shines like a beam, so not very effective
 
fairy nuff. I think if they were effective as marine light, someone would have brought out some type of product

If you are going with FO and will not be adding LR or interested in changing from FO in the future you could use xenon lamps - Actually Xenon lamps are in reality a Metal Halide based lamp. Xenon is a gas added to the lamp (similar to Mecury added to a Flourescent bulb) to provide usable light during the MH warm-up time (standard MH's typically use argon which heats up more slowly.

Xenon bulbs come in a variety of applications but generally they have considerable filteration which narrows their bandwidth thereby limiting their spectrum. This is done because most HID lamps have considerable output in the UV range and xenon bulbs are no exception - however, being that they are either used pointing directly at some one (headlight) or directly at living space these harmful rays (wavelengths) are removed. In aquaruim lighting these wavelengths are retained as they are the wavelengths which many marine organisms thrive in.

The good news is that Xenon HID lamp temperatures are typically about 6500 K - which is solidly in the acceptable range for Marine organisms though not likely optimum. They also provide a hi CRI and therfore have a wide spectrum less the UV and near UV wavelengths.

That is very cool, but it seems that for a reef tank the xenons are not ideal, or are they?? is the metal halide still better :whistling:?
 
looks complicated....i will wait for me detailed research and proven coral growth. BTW: The user abandoned the whole thing and the other chap with the BMW headlights didnt show any pics of his tank and coral growth......im not convinced yet.

I agree, still sticking to halides but xenons still look cool and help alot when driving at night :thumbup:
 
xenon in use

i have had mini reefs sens i was 10 years old my anser is yes xenon works better then any light i have ever had and i have had them all xenin is brighter crisper and overall better looking light then any thing i have ever used i have a 35 hex with 1 10k 35w xenon lamp all my livestock loves it 1 would put it up with a 175w mh light any day
