Hello Moolis

Ons het 'n berg likiwaan baba op die plaas gekry Saterdag, het iemand asb vir my meer inligting oor die dingetjie. Ek weet hy vreet eiers en meelwurms, en hou van plantmateriaal soos groente, maar dis algemene kennis. Die kinders wil die ding grootmaak. Sy naam is Korporaal oor sy strepies.

errr........ is this one of those lizards you find on the beach ? ;)
 
i dont know what that thing sounds like, but do u really want to keep it as a pet?? ;)

might be best to phone moolis directly :)

relaised this is a marine site too late, sorry. but anyho a berg likiwaan is a monotor, looks almost like a komodo dragon, just "slightly" smaller. the largest we saw as approx 2 meters, can eat a giant bull frog with one go, (the water monotors) and "slapps" its pry, like chicken flat with its tail, which is very powerful.
yes we will raise this baby, as we grew up on the farm, and the kids love it, will however keep an eye when it gets bigger (now the size of a large lizzard):p
 
there are dangerous animals, quite vicious, and u need a permit to keep them

Hi Hester

OK 3 things to keep in mind:
1. You need a permit to keep any indigenous species of reptile!
2. These guys grow massive, with a temperament to go with it.:(
3. Keeping them successful involve, not only a large cage with adequate lighting, but also regular large feedings of meaty foods like mice (then rats and the rabbits) boosted with calcium.

Personally, I would not keep it as a pet, rather keep a Beardy or (if you want a big reptile) a Iguana. :wave2:
