I see the majority are using real ocean.... maybe i have a bad batch
my ph in freshly made up R/O and salt = 7.4 and alkalinity 7

Reminds me of a cigarette advertisement some years ago - Smoke Lucky Strike: 2.5 million mine workers can't all be wrong...

I think the only reason why so many people use that salt is because it is slightly cheaper, NOT because it is better.

I think a bit more than slightly, in some cases half the price.

You lucky, I have heard of alkalinities as low as 4 with this salt.

IMO, it is just too inconsistent

how is the tetra guys i want to swap from real ocean to tetra and want to know who is better

I'm new to this, but my water parameters seem fine with Tetra - PH is spot on at 8.4ppm and Alkilinity is a little higher than it should be but still acceptable (Red Sea test kit). The calcium is low though (Red Sea Pro Kit). I'm currently mixing with tap water and chlorine remover.

I am going to switch to Red Sea salt with RO water though. The plan is to mix a 200l batch in a drum with a DSB, and keep alternating water between that and my tank. The DSB should get rid of the nitrates and I will suppliment the water to get trace elements back up.

Please stop immediatley. Use only RO water. Should you not own a RO unit, buy RO from a LFS or if you know of any reefers nearby, try them out.

I know, I need to go buy a container or something. Went looking yesterday and couldn't find what I wanted :(

There must be guys on this forum that can help you with RO water Dillon. Start a new thread.

Can we re-set/start a new thread, be interesting to see how the "newer" brands are faring in the South African Market
