Quarantine share and tell

Hi All,

Thinking about starting the correct way from the start, so going to build a little quarantine tank. Thought I would ask if people could share their own QT's with us so that we could all learn from each other - maybe?

Please share size, design, equipment, Quarantine process, etc

my DT is only 200ltrs so my QT is small. I QT for two weeks (4 for ws prone species) and treat with metronidazol (continue the treatment for another 2 weeks once they are introduced to the DT)

It is about 30ltrs (will check the exact dimensions when i get home), i run a 16w flourescent tube (nothing special needed unless you plan on quarentining corals aswell), a 100w aqualife heater and a cascade 300 internal filter (removed the carbon and put in another sponge). I also put in a few old rocks for hiding spots (put them in boiling water and completely dry them out after every batch of fish i quarentine to make sure nothing is transfered to the next group)

It is a very basic setup but it definately does the job for smaller specimens, the only drawback is that oxygen gets used up very quickly if there is a powerfailure
 
I do the bucket method first, for 10 days.

Then the fish go into this tank for 4 to 6 weeks

Hey Riaan..sorry about hijacking the thread but did you get a starter copepod kit to start off..or did you take some amphipods and live rock from your display tank..just asking wanting to start something similar but have no idea about the copepods..:blush:
 
copepods are vegetarians. So in any environment where they cannot be hunted down, they will expand in numbers and grow a nice colony. As long as there is food. So a phosphate loaded environment, promoting algae growth under good lights that runs for too long, that helps. Completely something you do not want in your main system. A few pieces of liverock from your current system, and they will be there.

and that is also the reason why having a nano system, and a 6-line wrasse, you will have algae issues. There are not a lot of grazers suitable for a nano tank, except a lawnmower blennie. Tangs are out in a little 80L system. 6-line wrasse being small and colourful, always on the move is a nice option then for a nano. But they destroy your only other grazers you have, being the copepods.

Brad I had a clean start with my tank fresh aragonite & bleached the LR but no life when I cycled the tank but kept on dosing special blend & now I have loads of pods from where who knows maybe from the special blend so ja no need for extra LR IMHO at least there's no aptasia, touch wood.
 
Next week I am going to qt all my fish and leave the display empty for 2 months.
I will start a thread next week to report on my experiences.
