Hi guys, I have finally found the perfect tank(for a steal) which I want to use for qt.

Some details on the tank: 1.2 x 0.5 x 0.5.
I want to drill the tank and add a sump, with some bio balls and a skimmer.

I will post pics a bit later as I still need to go and get the tank. The overflow is still something I need to think about, what do you guys reckon a nice one will be? Just the normal corner overflow?

I am planning to use the bucket method for the first 10 days and then put the fish into this tank and treat as necessary, but I think I will use a low dosage of copper.

Will keep you guys up to date.
 
I am going to get a 32mm hole drilled for the overflow, I think that will be fine with most returns.

Riaanp, you have a "permanent" qt, would you say it is better to have a more natural feel to the tank than a clean tank? I read Hennie(reef maniac) did his qt like this and then only treated the fish when they showed signs of disease.
 
my holding system is overgrown with algae. And that’s the way I like it. Loads of copepods living in there. Enough greens for vegetarians like lawnmower blennies, etc.

If I need to treat any fish, I rather take them out and treat them in my buckets.

Rather go for 50mm plumbing, much more freely available at all hardware shops.

two 50 liter buckets is fine for the bucket method ?

I want to use bio balls and live rock rubble in the sump. The live rock I am going to place in trays so that it is easy to clean it.

So after one introduced a fish into this holding system one has to wait 3months before I can buy another one correct?
 
I got smaller buckets as well for smaller fish. So depending on the fish size.

I got a lot of bio-balls in the sump, Get the ones that float. Easier to bump them around and get the stuck detritus dropping out.

After bucket method the fish goes into the holding tank for 6 weeks. Then he goes to the display. If after 6 weeks nothing did show up then you can get the next fish into the holding system. Its always at least 6 weeks after the last symptoms displayed.

If I get the soil vent valve, would I still need to have a overflow box or can I just have the pipe in the tank?
 
still need an overflow box.
Else the muck will stay on top of the surface.
 
Lets say I want the water level at 45. Does the soil vent valves top be at 45 or the holes where the water drains through?
 
water goes in underneath the cap. So the top would stick out. Water level ends up to be about 10-15mm from the bottom end of the cup.
 
This is the tank, I am still bust filling, I should be done by the middle of the week.

might be better to use offcuts of pvc pipe for hiding places with minimal rockwork if any..;)
 
Or an icecream tub, with holes cut into it. But first, eat the icecream.
 
I use those rock like structures that is used for reptiles. They are not porous, easy to clean and does look kind of natural for the fish to hide in. A bit expensive, taking into account that PVC pieces are a lot cheaper.

I still have a few pieces of DIY rock that I plan to use. But those reptile rocks look great! Just for extra info I am not planning to dose any medication in this tank
