Hi,
I tested some led’s for marine application some time ago and found that Led’s was not suitable for marine growth. The led’s I used were Cree’s with optical lenses. I posted my findings on MASA but that was a long time ago. As I am in the led light manufacturing business I always receive information on new products. I received information on these led chips for marine application. I tested them and mounted the 10W ones in my 10W down lighter lamp housing with heat sink and driver for 12V application. For the UV ones I will have to make changes to fit them to my lamp. I like what I am seeing so far but I still want to take par readings at different depths on the white ones. See led specs below.

WHITE LED
This ultra-bright LED is specifically designed for reefkeeping aquariums to ensure optimal coral growth conditions and colour enhancement.
The LED is very bright, with 900 Lumens in a 140 degree lambertian pattern.
Compared to most LEDs, you would say this is 270,000 millicandela or 120 Watt Halogen light. Either way, its incredibly bright! The output is a ‘Aquamarine cool‘ 15000K, not a “Cool' incandescent-looking white.
Specifications:
1. Shape: Square
2. Color:Aquamarine Cool white
3. Colour temperature: 15000K
4. Size: 20 x 29.5mm
5. Light source type: High Efficient power led
6. Led chips Qty:1 piece
7. LED Chip Brand: Epistar
8. Forward Current: 900mA
9. Forward Voltage:DC 9.0 – 10.8V
10. Total Power: 10 Watt
11. Luminous Flux: 900 LM
12. Colour Rendering Index:>75
13. Beam Angle:140°
14. Working Temperature: -30°C~50°C
15. Life Span: >50,000hrs
16. Ambient Humidity: 10%~95%
17. IP CODE :IP55
18. Safety Certificate: CE/ROHS

BLUE LED
This ultra-bright LED is specifically designed for reefkeeping aquariums to ensure optimal coral growth conditions and colour enhancement. The LED is very bright with a 140 degree lambertian pattern. Compared to most LEDs we found authentic EPISTAR LEDs to be even brighter than CREE, you would say this is a 120 Watt Halogen light. Either way, its incredibly bright! The output is a Aquamarine Royal Blue with a 470nm wavelenthth –
Specifications:
1. Shape: Square
2. Color: Aqua Royal Blue
3. Colour wave length: 470NM
4. Size: 20 x 29.5mm
5. Light source type: High Efficient power led
6. Led chips Qty:1 piece
7. LED Chip Brand: Epistar

17. Safety Certificate: CE/ROHS

UV LED
Make your own unique UV (violet)light or a fish tank light panel light with this AQUA UV LED, build them into your deck convert any light to LED!The LED is also perfect for building your own grow light or special effects. The output is a deep UV colour with a wavelength between 395 - 410nm.Guaranteed to bring out colour of your favourite coral and bring uniqueness to any surface

There’s also a white blue 10W combination chip but it is not as bright as the pure white one.

See picture of my light housing I made it with a wide diffuser lens to further increase the light angle. I designed this lamp for a 10W house down lighter but I think it will work very well for marine tanks.

I would love to try one of your diffusers,it looks good.

What the the departure angle af the light after it exits your diffuser?
What height would you recommend the diffuser is to be mounted abive the tank?
Does the MR16 or GU10 globe fit inside the diffuser or does it fit on top, a picture would help.
Is the diffuser acrylic?
Do you lose light intensity shining it through the diffuser?

Exuse all the questions,I'm not putting your design on a chopping block, just VERY curios and interested.:)

led lights

Hi Chris,
I designed the light for house applications the problem with any down lighter for house application is the viewing angle, I use a single 10W led with a viewing angle of 140 deg on my down lighter its better than most of the ones you can buy. Chris if you give me your mail address I can send you the info on my house lights. My diffuser is part of my lamp you cannot use it on other lamps. The diffuser lens is made of polycarbonate and the light housing is Glass fill nylon. I think what you want to know is if this light will supply the required PAR, I made a testing unit a long time ago for testing light underwater but I don’t have it any more I will now have to make a new one. I just got these new led’s and you saw the claims and specifications so I will do PAR readings on the white light and we can see the results. I don’t think that the blue and UV lights will give good PAR readings I don’t know if they should for marine growth.

Hi All,
Sorry for the long delay. I ordered the blue LEDS while Speed post was on strike. I am still waiting for them. I tested my standard 10w white light but the output was not good enough. What I did learn from my test was the wide viewing angle I got, I could move the light far away from the sensor and the PAR reading remained the same. I manufacture many LED lights for different applications. I converted my house lights to a 24Vsolar house light system that’s not affected by Escoms power cuts I designed a special globe that compares very well with incandescent globes if interested send me your e mail address and I will send you the specs. My tank is down at the moment I want to convert its lights to also work from the 24V solar system. I do make a very powerful LED lamp for mine dump trucks but the cost is high It uses 7x 1OW CREE LEDS. I will re order some of those blue LEDS and the white ones of marine application again. Picture is from the LED manufacturer

Hi,
I did the tests on those led’s but the PAR reading was not that good. I just did a solar powered light conversion for a pet shops fresh water fish tanks using strip lights. I did not take par readings but the lights in the tanks were far better than the light from the florescent tubes they used before and a huge saving on the power bill. I only used one strip of 50/50 led lights and the lights did not even cover the entire tank length. I think if one were to use strip lights that cover the entire tank area one will get a very good light because the light will overlap each other thus increasing the PAR output. I am busy with very powerful led’s for a mine application, would like to see the par reading on them but they will have to be to be mounted some distance from the tank. See picture of fish tanks light installation the light is much brighter than what the picture is showing. See pictures of our infinity lights.
