Well, the bug has bitten quite bad and my current system is just not big enough anymore. So it's time for the inevitable upgrade.

I have decided to throw out most of the stuff in my study and to build the tank in there. First have to rip out the carpet and tile it, then the rest can follow.

The DT will be 1100x1100x550mm (630litre) with a 1000x600x350mm sump.

The lights will be LED (more to follow later on this).

This is the layout and build I have in mind. Currently nothing has been bought or ordered (except for the LED's and drivers), but the rest should follow soon, i hope...

The stand will be wood as in my previous design.
 
I have designed the lights to match the spectrum of photosynthesis for SPS. The design consists of a mix of Royal Blue, Cool White, Warm White, Blue and Violet LED's (all Cree except the Violet). 52 LED's total.

The ideal spectrum:

I might add a second light later if needed, but this should be sufficient for a wide range off corals

I built my own LED unit with about 140 CREE led's very similar to yours. I find it creates some weird tricks on your eyes if you stand too close to the tank. I diffused with some T5's and seems to help. Have you found this with your current build?

Cant say that I have. My current build only has 32 Led's though. What are you using to drive the LEDs?

is it strong enough to hold 800 kg plus rock and the tank ?

What wood is it

Jip, should be able to hold up to 3000kg's.

It's metanti, not the strongest but compensated for in design.
 
I love the lighting simulations you did, in Matlab I presume?

Anyway, may I ask for a bit more details on how you approached this?

Also, did you take into account the fact that yu would get total internal reflection off the glass panels?

there is a thread here where i put 500kg concrete blocks on 2cm thick pine

meranti is a great wood, and perfect to be around water... IIRC wood can hold 700psi and thats for pine.

The code is kind of complicated but in essence it integrates the LUX (lumens/Area) over a XY grid. I simulated the LEDS as point sources with lumens values from datasheets and assumed conical dispersion at depth. I did not take into account the reflections but it should be small as it should only happen at the bottom of the tank. If you like I can email you the code for the sim.

Wood is great yes, easy to work with and much better looking than steel imo. Unfortunately you do need more of it, but a small price to pay. Meranti is very a very good price/performance wood and as you say, great around water, provided that you varnish it properly. This stand soaked up about 3 litres of woodoc varnish.

So you spaced the LEDs to give you full coverage at the bottom then? I did a calculation for some guys on TASA a while ago and I came to the conclusion that you want to space the leds so that the light cone covers exactly the suface of the water, since the internal reflection off the sides would give you better total spread.

Any ways, let me not further hijack your thread...

I have read about the concept on the surface coverage. I opted to go for maximum intensity for SPS though. The hot zones, red and orange, is for the SPS. Did the same for my previous build with great results.

you dont need much more wood, look at the fish thread, i made that corner stand from meranti
