I always thought of myself as a bit of an LPS aficionado...but this one has me slightly stumped...it may be I've been out of the game too long! :p

First thoughts were Chalice, but its structure doesn't lend towards one correctly...any thoughts here?

Been debating this all day on one of the other forums and still nobody is quite sure...

It does look almost like an Acanthestrea Echinata...maybe just a different type to the ones we get so commonly here?

I don't know...echinophyllia was another option...
 
not an acan echinata, I have several including the lords. Some sort of chalice. Oxypora or possibly echinophyllia
 
Probably Echinophyllia. Hard to tell them apart from Echinopora and Oxypora though unless you can see the skeleton.

Here is a better pic of the coral...like I've said all along...first impressions were Chalice...but still feel it doesn't look like the usual type of chalice we see.
 
Na think chalice is out, as its too meaty ! I had such a nice picture chart of all the brains and acans and am almost 100% sure it was on there but for the life of me i can not find it! I will continue looking though!

I would lead towards an Acan Bowerbanki but a bit hard to tell with out seeing the skeleton. I have had one or two come through that looked similar to this, but that's the beauty of coral each one is different!

i have seen alot of chalice, have 3 myself all different and they dont get so meaty like that.

Does it have a thick skeleton?
It looks similar to a chalice i once had. I got it from a badly neglected tank and it was thick and meaty like yours. After a few months in my tank and some growth, it took on a more normal looking chalice appearance

Your thinking is exactly why I am confused as to what it is...because I have also had loads of different chalices species over time and none have been meaty like this or had the sort of structure this one does...its true its hard to tell without seeing the skeletal structure what exactly it infact is...Acan Bowerbanki was what I thought and looked at as well, but then the "heads" of the bowerbanki seem more pronounced than this...

Just came across a new Acan I had never heard of before and now leaning towards this maybe... Acanthastrea Hillae?

@459b what are you confused about? If you read and quoted my full post you would not have question marks under your post!

What chalice did you have? Mycidium , Oxypora , Echinopora , Echinomorpha , Pectinia?

What I am saying is we looking for an id not just the genus of the coral ie acan bowerbanki not just acan!

How big is your coral?
