Cape Town Catches 2013/2014

Hi guys and girls

There are a few threads running with guys showing off their catches from KZN and the Easter Cape, so I though its about time us Capies get a catching threat started as well.

Don't expect any Gem Tangs or Tiger Angels to be caught here by us but it would be interesting to see what is being caught on our side of the world.

So, anyone catch anything interesting lately?
 
I would love to see some cold water tanks pop up. I think one could set up some stunning tanks with the all the cold water life down there.
 
Lol. Caught some klipvissies on a line the weekend. We need to get some guys together and do a lekker dive to catch some fish. I want to go out to Strand this weekend, hopefully wanna catch some Marleys and see what else is available.

It would be interesting to see what guys catch and how well they do in cool temperature tanks. I can see the fish adapting alot better from around False Bay side but Atlantic side you gonna need a chiller to keep it at..... freezing.
 
I would totally have a coldwater NPS tank if I stayed down your side. Would just need to be thick acrylic and well insulated with a big chiller. Plenty of large polyped softies and cool anemones down there that could be fed quite easily by NPS standards.

Well done! Awesome catches. So Marleys are now here! Will try and find some soon! How is the squid doing?

Awesome, Awesome. Awesome...... So much potential. Far better than the many boring stick tanks that have become uninteresting to reed. Well for me that is the case.

Who is going to produce a cold water stunner? :1:

Easier said than done. I may add some purple soft coral to my tank at some stage. Apart from that there's not much else to add. The local anemonies, apart from strawberries, move around too much. I've got some Cape zoas (like the ones in my avatar) but they are very small and not much to look at.
Some sponges would be nice, but aren't that easy to grow.

I've seen at least 4 species of branching Alcyonium down there that should do well? You also get coldwater Cerianthus anemones occasionally.

Don't forget Malacacanthus:

Yes that's a nice sunburst, but i think you have to go deep for them. I think there's only 2 alcyonium species, but with variable colors. I collected some this morning in brown, orange and purple variations - the colonies are so small they're really better suited for a nano/pico exibit.
btw you have some nice pictures, where did you take them?

Some nice catches there @SteveZi. I have been to Strand to check out how things look but not sure where to start. Where is Blakes beach? I asked the local dive centre and they weren't sure. Where should I enter to get Marleys?

You do not understand how jealous I am that the collection team can bring other aquarists new animals to show

It's on the left hand side of the Strand Pavilion. Hope you have better viz than here...
