I have had it with these fish juzzzuz. Two fish in two weeks. Find them biltong on the floor. What I don't get is I cover the tank with egg crate at night. I might leave a gap of 1cm but how the he'll do these okes aim at exactly that gap to get out.

All the fish are bigger than the egg create slots. I tell you this hobby is testing my patience. Anyone got a clever idea?
 
I made this the one afternoon when I removed my Hood...bit of a "spoeg en plak" but only needed it for one afternoon...I got this mesh at Builders Express in the Garden Section...something like this could help...if it's in a "frame"...they come in different colours and "hole" sizes...

Eish man sorry to hear.

But fish dont jump. They probably get startled and swim fast in an upwards direction and then breach the surface. We call it jumping, fish call it swimming up and away
 
Every now and again i hear a splash and a thud as something hits the hood of my tank, so i would never not have a hood
 
You can't leave gaps in a cover...fish WILL find them eventually. I'm using eggcrate at the moment but I'm busy making a new more light-friendly cover with monofilament. Just having a hard time finding a suitable frame to hold it.

While we're on the subject...I'd love to know what percentage of reefers have covers on their tanks. I don't think is anyone out there who hasn't had a fish go carpet surfing on them, yet I think the number is surprisingly low. I just don't see the logic in not having a cover. Surely a slight eyesore is less of a concern than dead fish?

Similarly, I don't think there is one LFS in Durban that has tank covers. I just don't get it. They complain about finding half of their sleeper gobies and dartfish on the floor the morning after they arrive, but they still don't install tank covers. Is occasionally lifting a cover actually less of a problem than picking dead fish off the floor? :confused1:

I've got a Hooded Tank and I've never had a fish go "carpet surfing"...touch wood...I could, if I'm cleaning and somehow frightened a fish and made him jump..:(..but I've been spared that heartache..so far...touch wood..having said that...I also have to agree that I don't understand the logic of not having a Hood...thats one of the reasons that I refused to do any mods on my Tank that would result in me having to remove the Hood...guess thats also why I selected a Tank with a Hood in the first place...trust me, it's a pain...all the disadvantages, but when you weigh the "pro and cons"..I'll settle any day with all the "disadvantages" than wake up one morning and see a "carpet surfing" fishy..:(..that's just to painful..:(

Fish are masters at aiming, have you ever accidentally banged the tank or even when you put a net in the tank and within a split second all of the fish have disappeared into all the nooks and crannies, that's ninja aiming right there . ;)

Do you use a night light? I have a feeling that fish tey and head for them and end up carpet surfing

@Lord_Blackadder - I appreciate what you saying and thank you. However I must say this gap was like 1cm it really was. They had to touch, pause engage to make it through there. It's like having a massive garden and finding the one small door at the back onto the road.....

My tank is covered with egg crate but its a nightmare with my lights....
