Hi MASA. I am planning on doing a DIY LED lighting unit but i have being going through some of the older threads for ideas and info and i have noticed some of the guys that have done diy leds have reverted back to t5's. Is there any specific reason why, is the led's not good enough?

my 2 cents. - if its not broken, why change it.
there are pro's and con's to both.

I believe all lights have pros and cons and also it comes down to personal preference. The point is a person would always like to upgrade to something better i.e. from t5's to led's or what ever. I just want to know by the guys that done these 'upgrades' why they reverted back to their previous systems. Their diy builds is a guide line for the rest of us and it would only be fair that they let us know if they encountered problems etc.

the only con i see with Led is that u need 10K of lighting fro 900*600*600 DT and it looks amazing with them and u get that nice shimmer effect that mh give u face the fact LEd is the future in Marine tank lighting t5 and mh will fade away sooner or later

Which guys? I have DIY led's and only run them at 60%.... I will NEVER go back to mh or t5....

Maybe the other guys did a bad DIY job :whistling:

shaunn and you are happy so far with your choice or would you have changed something now that you are running leds?

if i had the cash i who'd have bought more the pro out way the cons in led lighting

Pros
only have the change led after 12 years of use
low power consumption
low heat generation
easy mix of different spectrum of lighting
some are modular

Cons
Cost
if u go fro the cheaper vertex u need 4 fro 900*600*600 DT

butcherman while you are responding on this thread , would you say 2 royal blue to 1 cool white ratio be right and for moonlights 1w or 0.5w with 100ma to a 350ma driver for the moonlights (dimmable of course)?

i uses a 50/50 split on royal blue and cool white, with a typhoon controller. This way i had the benifit of more white for growth. By setting the maximum output values for white and blue you can make the tank more blue or white. So during the day when i am at work my tank it bright and more white, at night when I am home I enjoy the colour popping royal blues.
