So........last night part of durbanville,brackenfell,kraaifontein and kuilsriver got struck with a massive power outage............and after 22 hours Im still out...........my corals is looking really bad and the livestock wont last much longer with the constantly dropping temp.........temp around 21 degrees now and according to city of tygerberg we "might" have juice by 18:00.I dont know what will survive but Im utterly miserable right now.

If you have a "not to expensive" pump you can run it from that as well.

Would not risk electronic equipment.

Come and pickup if you want to.

PS gas heaters works well as well, also got one of those.

Thx for the offer.........but by the time I get everything set up the power might be on........worst of the damage has been done......only thing now is to see what recovers when the power gets on.

The bastards are working on a box across from my house and I got out fully kitted with a very unsatisfied look on my face.......so they seem in a hurry to fix it
 
Shame man - not nice at all.
carbon dioxide can be removed by adjitating the water surface and do some reurch on Hydrigon paroxide ( from the chemest )for oxigenating the tank in emergencies.

Lack of oxygen is the biggest problem. Get a battery powered air pump for the future.

For now stir the water with a large spoon or something as suggested above.

Definately works..i stirred every hour on the hour for a few minutes with a wooden spoon(I do my salt mix with it, doesn't get used for anything else)...just "chop" the water surface...
 
Thx guys........using my turkey baster to stir things up on the surface and getting a bit of afternoon sun now heating up the ambient temp.........hopefully the power will be on before sundown
 
xenia looks like its recovering.....hammer and froggie opened immediately......mushrooms dont look fazed.........just torch looking a bit droopy....all fishies ate.....and cleaner still moving.....damsel is looking a bit shy now....maybe he thinks he was being punished

After this stress , the fish can get WS up to 2 weeks from now because of there immune system been under strain.

Maybe feed the fish a bit af garlic or use the 10 day course of herbatana as a preventative measure.

Just a thought .
 
Try aiming as many of your powerheads to the surface. It will speed up oxiginating process. Or add a few airstones to your sump. Hope things get back to normal asap.

got Ocean Nutrition pellets with garlic...will that help?

Just a heads up for next time. :thumbup: Feeding is not a good idea after a power-out. The filtration will have taken a knock and may not be able to handle the extra bio load. Best to wait a day or two before resuming.

Keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite and be prepared for a water change should things go south.

Sounds good otherwise.

was planning a water change for tomorrow anyway......should i proceed or do it sunday?
 
The tank may "mini cycle" . I would just let in run for a day or so monitoring the ammonia. You should see an increase if the filter was affected. If all is well, let it be and then do a water change next week. Less stress on the filter and it will recover sooner.
